After all the gremlins with the MP4-18 were more or less ironed out, the MP4-19 got to see the light of day as a development of the unraced machine, sporting however the same characteristic nose. This entire car is considered a debugged 18, but still McLaren had trouble integrating the Mercedes engine into the chassis. The issue created repeating reliability issues during testing, which essentially left both drivers unsure of their car's capabilities until the beginning of the season.

The MP4-19 was used in the first 9 races of 2003 during which it was quickly obvious the car was not good enough to compete at the highest level. Reliability was a major issue, and the team worked fiercely on the MP4-19B, an big update package for the regular 19 that would prove a little more promising.
