Falkenhausen's connections with BMW, led to his founding Alex von Falkenhausen Motorenbau of Munich soon after the Second World War, basing his developments on the BMW 328 sports car.

The AFM machines had an excellent power-to-weight ratio but even the great pre-war Auto Union ace Hans Stuck struggled to keep them on the track.

He built single seaters from 1949, although by 1950 he was virtually working full time for BMW once again. From 1951 his cars used the new Kuchen V8 engine, although active factory support was withdrawn soon after.
