After making his fortune in the timber business, Ken Tyrrell was able to endulge his passion for motorsport and started racing in Formula Three. He did well in this formula throughout the 1950s.
In 1960 Ken formed the Tyrrell Racing Organisation and ran cars in various lower formulas, before entering Formula One in 1968. Jackie Stewart won the drivers championship in in 1969, and again in 1971, with the team also winning the constructors championship that year.
The increasing financial requirements of Formula One meant that in 1997 Ken Tyrrell sold the team to British American Tobacco for $30 million. A new team was started under the name B.A.R under the lead of Jacques Villeneuve's manager Craig Pollock. Ken Tyrrell died in August 2001.
