the green marking is on the rim, its part of the colour scheme on the rim, but none the less, why is it orange marked?

Why would mismatched tyres be used? Green on the right, blue on the left.

The blues are 2011 inters and the greens are 2012.

But, why?

Measuring difference in tyre life/wear?

Or it could just be them burning up spares....they do bring wet tyres to every race after all but they hardly ever get used?

Hirohide Hamashima most likely wanted to test the difference in the 2011/12 spec tyres in order to understand and correlate the information and data in a bid to aid Ferrari in gaining a better direction in terms of aero and mechanical grip.

Call it an assumption, but thats the only "logical" reason why it is being done

If you wanted to test the differences between two different specs of tires, you'd make two runs, one with each full set. Otherwise, the data collected will be badly skewed, because F1 cars have four wheels, so four tires are required to gather a complete profile of their performance.

Hopefully JT will be around at some point to tell me just how wrong I am.

EDIT: Could the green marking actually be Flo-vis?

Considering that loads for each tyre are different, I think you're right.

Maybe they're trying out experiments to find the crossover time to switch between the two tyres, and correlating to temps? Ie in the future if they see the wets at xyz degrees then it's time to switch to the intermediates, and vice versa? I suspect the balance will vary into left/right hand corners, and they'd know which is better?

The track was drying at certain times yesterday.

I think it probably measures wing flex via laser.

Sensor to monitor wing flex, I guess.

From the teams' tweets it seems all dry run so far in Mugello.
WilliamsF1Team Bruno says the track is pretty awesome from his first few runs......although aero runs mean he can't push too hard!
