Hello folks,

What determines the location of the nose tip this season. Merc and Ferrari have the tip of the noses behind the leading edge of the front wing, while the rest have it sticking further out. Do the rules mandate where the nose tip should be?

I think this quite nicely summarises why all the fuss about the noses is slanted by a bit of rose-tinted spectacles: that Ferrari is not a beautiful car - I really would struggle to understand if anyone said it was -but I'm sure most people would remember it fondly because of the racing, the drivers, the vibe (not to mention general nostalgia).

My point is that if we have a good season with harder to race cars spicing it up a bit, the noses quickly become irrelevant. Plus, as others have said, I like the variety and was continually curious to see how each team would interpret the rules - rather than there being one acceptable, optimal solution from the get-go.

Conclusion: I think ugly cars are quite interesting.

Feb.26 (GMM) F1's ugly face of 2014 could get uglier still.

That is the warning of the German specialist magazine Auto Motor und Sport, claiming that car designers are looking into nose solutions for the new rules that are even less attractive than those already used during testing.

With the 'gentleman's appendage', asymmetrical and 'vacuum cleaner'-style noses already in action, respected correspondent Michael Schmidt said some all-new solutions could be seen as early as this week at the final Bahrain test.

"(In the wind tunnel) we are trying every kind of nose that is in circulation," admitted Force India technical boss Andy Green.

Schmidt concluded: "If that is the case for Force India, then the big teams will be doing even more."

It is likely Lotus' unique, double-tusk solution is causing the most head-scratching among rival teams, with many perhaps not having initially considered the idea of utilising the concept of asymmetry.

"Our spies tell us that some teams are considering 'anteater' noses that do not grow from the middle of the car, but to the left or to the right," said Schmidt.

Jep been reading that too on AMuS. Sounds Scary.

But at least Mercedes will keep their Philosophy, they will even take it further in the next Test with the Nose even lower and shorter.

I forget the figures but in terms of distance from the Front Wheel Centre Line (FWCL), the tip has to be between the point where the trailing edge of the main plane (Y250) section starts and a point quite a bit beyond the front wing endplate leading edge line.

Mercedes are rumoured to be bringing their nose further down and backwards. The furthest they could bring it back is in line with the trailing edge of the Y250 section.

I'll double check but the measurements in reference to the FWCL might be in the diagrams at the bottom of the tech regs.

Maybe I post it here, because it's thread about noses after all.

Racecar Engineering raised (reminded) important issue here, which was reported by many earlier on. New noses are not as safe as regulations want them to be, as we could see that when Kobayashi rear-crashed Massa at the start of the race, so "this lifted the Williams onto the top of the Caterham putting the rear crash structure perilously close to Kobayashi’s helmet."
Not to mention flying wheel all over Caterham (luckily still attached to the car)
