2014 Barcelona test (13-14 May)

Post

Since I cannot find a single appropriate thread for this, lets talk about it here, shall we?

First up. Chilton. Which corner did he cut to make that time possible? =D>

What time? Where are you getting timing from? What are you talking about?

Chilton just set the fastest time of the day. Three seconds faster than his qualifying time last sunday, apparently.

I suspect track conditions were worse than they were on saturday, so how is that possible? Timing failure? :D

He was on the super soft, 2nd fastest (Pic) was on the soft, and 3rd (Hamilton) was on the mediums.

SS-Med difference can't be 3 seconds and not between the worst and the best car on the grid? What on earth happened?

Yeah, very strange indeed.
If it happened last year or 10 years ago, one could say he was underweight, but that's not possible today.

Given its a test I'd say they were running the car either underweight, or with extra downforce (using illegal bodywork) in order to get perhaps a better understanding of the tyres or obtain some other data which they otherwise can't get while running at their normal pace.

It seems that only a few teams on the grid can manage to run car significantly underweight, but even if they could the weight limits must be met on tests now AFAIK. Illegal bodywork is possible but to give 3 seconds a lap it must be quite radical, so if it is indeed so we would see that on photos probably.

You don't need to be on minimum weight during tests. You could test unlimited fuel flow or suction fans and no one would trouble you even for a moment. Compliance with the rules is purely at team's discretion.

It just seems unlikely that Marussia, strapped for cash, would spend their time and money to place something far-out on the car like that...

Well I think they need to be running approved tubs and crash structures in the tests.

...I always wondered if you would lap faster or slower if you took out the mass of the batteries, controllers, loom and MGUs from the car.
