It doesn't look yellow, it's (to me) a weird, uncomfortable, color somewhere in between orange and yellow.

To me it really looks like the red has just been discolored in some way.

Well, the original "Team McLaren" colour was a yellow-orange called 'Papaya'..

Or do you think its a Marlboro 'Nicotine' yellow? ..If we want to go all.. "discoloured, weird" & "uncomfortable"..

This.

It's screwing with my eyes because my brain just assumes it should be that bright red, it's just strange.

I can understand your plight. This is a papaya, a fruit that grows down here.

Green, yellow, orange, red....

I hate this thing.

To some people, me included, it smells like puke.

The rest of humankind (not mutants, I guess) swears it tastes and smells perfectly.

Now, I hope you hate that colour even more. It deserves to be hated.

I fall for phytonesque sarcasm.

Still, I can only say the best about the papayas of southern India - delicious, aromatic fruits.

They should come fresh from the tree right at the peak of their ripeness, a little earlier or later - not good. I never noticed any unaromatic scent on a fresh papaya (unlike the jackfruit), but maybe that varies with regions or kind of fruit.

The pod of a perfectly ripe papaya tends to be more evenly shaded than depicted above, with the original McLaren colour corresponding very well to it -

never thought I would state all that on an F1 board though :wtf: .-)

Strad that last shot of the M4B looks a red-orange ( referenced against the red/yellow Shell signage),
& more like the traditional Chevrolet engine colour, than 'Papaya'..

Wonder when they settled on the yellow-orange as a preference, & did Enzo protest that it was.. too red?

Yes, def' like the Chev colour - closer to the red end of the orange range..

Bruce had already done slapped ol' Enzo - by winning the `66 Le Mans 24hr in a Ford..

Yet his fellow Kiwi in that car, Chris Amon - got a factory Ferrari driving gig..

Traditional national colours for World Championship racing were still in use up through the `60's

& Bruce & Chris Amon's `66 Le Mans winning Ford - was in New Zealand's national colour of black.

Likely, black was felt to be a bit too sombre - to adopt as a team colour in the swingin', psychedelic `60s..

Ferrari has retained Italian red, but BRG, another sombre scheme, is long gone..

& yeah - that `74 Indy winning McLaren - still looks the business.. ..& it is a reminder..
..that car is 40 years old, but still looks current-ish.. .. well, certainly closer to today's stuff,
..than to the equivalents from the 1930s, or 40 years before it.. ..hmmm..
