Why are 2014 cars so much slower in high speed?

Post

Only lack of downforce and excess of weight

Or also turbo engine's characteristics? I.e. torque

I remember that Button, in a pre-season interview which I am unable now to find, said that there was a difficult balance for high-speed corners and that a driver, seemingly different from previous seasons, has to leave the car sliding the corner and can return on throttle only at the very end .. But maybe it was a MP4-29's problem. Watching Rosberg's Suzuka pole, it was taking corners also with mid-throttle

Are you referring to high speed corners? If so then yes it really is mostly down to the reduction in downforce, increase in weight and may have something to do with the new turbocharged engines although I suspect that will be minimal and the effects of it should decrease year to year as the engines become more drivable with new engine maps etc.

DF restrictions + neutralized EBD + cr4p tires = cars slower than lmp1.

Are they?

edit: wanna have some facts?

Quali Interlagos 2014 (LMP1 vs F1).
LMP1: #20 1:17.442
F1: #6 1:10.023

Race fastest lap
LMP1: #2 1:18.367
F1: #44 1:13.555

Unless you're talking about high speed corner speeds you're wrong with your equation.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. Thread tittle says high speed.

Watch Rosberg's onboard footage in his pole lap around Austin, especially the first sector.

"Slow" around high speed corners, eh?

They aren't as fast as they were in 2008 or 2010, that's for sure, but a huge amount of downforce has definitely been clawed back since the start of the season. It wouldn't surprise me the least if the Mercedes WO6 could match the fastest laps from 2007-2011 around certain circuits.

That still shows F1 faster than LMP1. I also wouldn't trust the onboard graphics for speed when trying to make meaningful comparisons, you need to do a proper audio analysis to be sure of the speed.

If you say so.

because they have about 15-20% less downforce due to the ban of the exhaust blown diffusor and the smaller FW.

also the tyres give much less grip because they are harder compared to the 2013 models

Also about 8% extra weight compared to 2013. Only in Q and at the end of the races, though, if you look for the data you'll see that at the beginning of the race, when the 2013 cars would have about 30-40kg extra and the actual car weights would be similar, lap times were also quite similar (which still means somewhat lower high speed cornering in 2014, but not by much).

also the second wing at the rear has been banned from this year on. means also there less downforce in the rear.

Considering how castrated F1 is these days in terms of technical freedom, I still find it amazing that they can be as fast as they are.
