The "standard/simplified front wing" solution seems to be the kind of thing that has been repeated on the internet so many times that everyone believes it to be true simply because they've read it many times, not because research backs it up.

Nice point on running away from the maximum angle of attack. Fully agreed. But maybe one can have the cake and eat it?
What about you qualify with whatever you want (will be the maximum angle of attack) but you must then reduce the angle of attack of the wings by 5 degrees for the race?
The sheer variability forces teams to create designs with reduced sensitivity and stall would be further away in the race, which is when it matters.

It seems unfair that constructors can build cars that create a "difficult" wake, but competitors cannot build cars that neutralize it. If F1 is to remain the pinnacle of motorsport, constructors should be allowed to develop technology that can detect and analyze the air in front, and automatically adjust the aero elements accordingly. The net effect of this technology is that wake variability is neutralized. This then frees up the driver to focus on the task at hand, which is to catch the driver in front, rather than worry about how to deal with dirty air.
