F1 official statistic for overtaking?

Post

Dear all,

much has been said about the (un-)ability of overtaking due to the new F1 rules. Now I wondered whether FIA does maintain any statistics on overtaking during a Grand Prix or not. Well, I was not able to find one.

I did also notice that whenever in some press articles about F1 journalists mention the number of overtakes in a race they never cite an official statistic as well.

Do you know more, is there an official overtaking statistics and if not, why?

Thank you.

I do not believe there is an official statistic on overtakes per race at least not one which is published. The last in depth article I saw on the subject was from autosport http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/127597 which took its figures from here http://cliptheapex.com/overtaking/ which is as you say an unofficial source. Some teams release their own data on overtakes but the numbers can vary significantly, I think stats for the Australian GP this year varied between 5 and 20 overtakes.

Everything the FIA publish on a race can be found here http://www.fia.com/events/fia-formula-o ... rmation-22 and they do publish a lap chart so you can see where positions change http://www.fia.com/events/fia-formula-o ... p-chart-22 but the issue comes with how to classify an overtake. Take the Monaco GP for example, Vettel passed Raikkonen and Ricciardo passed Verstappen and Bottas in the pits, but some statistics that would not count those as overtakes because they occurred as a result of strategy rather than an on-track passing maneuver.

It would be interesting to see an official statistic on overtaking as well as a breakdown of wet/dry and DRS/non-DRS.

Thank you for sharing the link what FIA publishes per race, that's quite interesting.

I also fully agree with you that it is difficult to define an overtake properly, that's why I would find an official breakdown so useful. However it seems that FIA does gather some sort of official numbers on overtaking, but obviously not disclosed every race. I just came across an official article summarizing the past season: https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/feat ... mbers.html

where it says:
- Most overtakes: 78 - Max Verstappen; 61 - Daniel Ricciardo; 56 - Sergio Perez; 52 - Fernando Alonso; 49 - Valtteri Bottas

- Total overtakes: 866, just four shy of 2012's record
So, where did they get that numbers from? I wonder if they could be taken from the information published by FIA each race, e.g. from all the lap charts? Any ideas?
