Monteiro was so sure about his race seat, but I always expected that he wouldn't be the one to get it.

Yea since just before the end of the season he was constantly saying how he was going to get announced as having the drive in a few days. I'm glad he didn't get it though as in his first season people thought he was slow but consistent. But this season he showed that he was neither he was just lucky not to retire I can't remember how many spins he had on his lonesome this year.

I have to wonder if drive seats for teams down the slow end of the grid are awarded on merit or on how much money the driver brings in.

Without Schumacher major in the field there may be German sponsors looking for a someone to put their money behind - even if this is the case it doesn't mean Sutil won't perform well, just that getting a seat is dependent upon many more factors than driving well.

Apparently Sutil does have a bit of money behind him. But so did Monteiro so I think it was a case of driver skill as well on this one

Monteiro had some, but the deciding factor may be how much. Cynical I know, but...

On the bright side the three letter codes that last year had to show Montoya, Monteiro and Montagny will be a whole lot clearer in 2007.

Albers is not only Dutch but is a lot faster than Monteiro and doesn't have a habit of spinning the car for absalutly no reason. So why keep someone in the sport who has had 2 years and hasn't been promising instead of a complete rookie with promise or someone who has had a year in the sport(and although I can't stand him because of his ignorance and arrogance) has been on the pace of his team mate

So can you explain to me why is speed still racing???. You say Monteiro was lucky in the first season, then how about karthikeyan? He completly sucked, but he managed to be williams test driver thanks to his money.

Because this season was his rookie season. Simple as. You can't expect much better than what he delivered. What difference does it make that Narain got a test season. After this season whereby Monteiro got beaten Quali and race by Albers. The only thing that markd him out as a driver was the fact that in his first season he almost finished every race. But after the fact he got some coverage this season we can now see that he is slow and very reckless

I believe that with a reasonable car monteiro could do a good season. Its a shame that now that spyker seems to improve he is left out. I suppose without money there are no miracles...

This is the kind of thing that, if said often, might be acknowledged as true. Monteiro had, in 32 races, 1 DNF because of an unforced mistake. Spinning? Yeah, I remember him spinning twice this season when Sato hit him, once in Barcelona, while he was outperforming Albers in lap times and one silly mistake in the qualifying at Brasil. Do you recall anything else? Is this a shameful record?

Monteiro is no super-driver, ok - like Speed, Klien, Sato, Webber, Coulthard, Heidfeld, Barrichello (...) aren't. 2006 would always be a difficult year, given that Albers is a quick driver and was terribly underrated after his Minardi year. Furthermore, to get a fantastic drive as he did in Spa 2005 to get a 8th place in that crapbox that was still called Jordan would be difficult - furthermore if your teammate when isn't faster than you tries hard to smash into you (Monaco 2006, Albers).

But this is not a big concern. The Spyker still is a crapbox, they don't even have yet a title sponsor or money to build an interim car, will only start testing in February(!) and their comments on how pointless is to test when they already know Bridgestones - although every other 2006 Bridgestone client recognizes that the 2007 tyres are completely new and work very differently - are ridiculous. Bottom line - to worry about not having a portuguese driver in F1 driving a piece of junk, in the year after Montoya and Villeneuve were kicked out of F1 makes no sense.

Is this like the Schumacher pay packet.

If you aren't aware it seems that Raikkonen's pay will be about half of Schumacher's because Phillip Morris (Marlboro) added about $20m to Michael's. Is Sutil's salary supplemented by his sponsors?
