IF the result stands as it is, here are the standings after Hockenheim:

Hamilton - 65
Button - 58
Vettel - 55
Webber - 53
Alonso - 49
Kubica - 35
Massa - 34
Rosberg - 32
Schumacher - 13
Sutil - 11
Barichello - 10
Kobayashi - 5
Liuzzi - 2
Petrov - 2
Buemi - 1

The main change is just Vettel who is in 3rd. Currently Vettel/Webber are in joint 3rd, but Webber is ahead by default, as he has more wins.

I will update this if the Hockenheim race results change.

I just divided the new points by 2.5 to convert 25 for a win to the old 10 points

-
old new
points points
Hamilton - 65 - 62.8
Button - 58 - 57.2
Vettel - 55 - 54.4
Webber - 53 - 54.4
Alonso - 49 - 49.2
Kubica - 35 - 35.6
Massa - 34 - 34.0
Rosberg - 32 - 37.6
Schumacher - 13 - 15.2
Sutil - 11 - 14.0
Barichello - 10 - 11.6
Kobayashi - 05 -
Liuzzi - 02 - 04.8
Petrov - 02 - 02.8

The new points system is pretty much identical to the old in terms of the RELATIVE difference between the points for 1st 2nd 3rd etc. The only novelty is extending the points scoring positions down to 10th place. It did suprise me when drivers like Jenson Button commented on how much difference they thought the new points system would make at the start of the season. May be drivers don't concern themselves with it until the sharp end of the season, when the mathematical permutations come in to play.

Could someone identify why Rosberg is so much worse off under the old system. Is it all the 5th, 6th and 7th places he's had that get more points (relatively) in the new system?

Given Hockenheim stands, (I will update if there are penalties for Hockenheim), after Hungaroring they are:

Hamilton - 65
Webber - 63
Vettel - 61
Button - 59
Alonso - 52
Massa - 39
Kubica - 35
Rosberg - 32
Schumacher - 13
Sutil - 11
Barichello - 10
Petrov - 6
Kobayashi - 5
Hulkenberg - 3
Dela Rosa - 2
Liuzzi - 2
Buemi - 1

Interestingly, Webber, despite having 4 wins to Hamilton's 2, will still NOT be ahead of Lewis!! Vettel will also have overtaken Button in the standings. McLaren and Red Bull, in fact, will be TIED in the constructors.

Compared to the old system, what it really does is simply disadvantage second place finishers. If you normalize awarded points (ie. divide by 2.5) nothing has changed except for receiving less for a 2nd.

Hamilton finished second 3 times, Webber just once. That's why Webber is leading now and wouldn't be leading under the old system.

Actually I did the drivers' math already :P

As for constructors, Red Bull has 6 wins and not 5 (4 for Webber 2 for Seb)

Despite all the hoohaa about the new points system spreading out the points more, the difference between 1st and 2nd is 3 points vs 4 now, and in old money Seb is really just 1 win behind Mark.

1 points in 2009 is worth like 4 in 2010 (1 8th place finish)
in 2009 you would have needed 4 8th place finishes to achieve the same result

in regards to webber and vettel 4 wins vs 2 wins, the new points system were meant to give the person with the greater amount of wins a better chance in the championship???

Not true. The new points system doesn't reward winners. It punishes 2nd place

The current points system rewards consistancy but drivers do loose out big when they have a DNF. F1 should go back to the old championship format which existed till 1990 where only the best 70% of the drivers results were considered for the WDC.

I think this would help a closer championship when more than 2 drivers are in the running.

It could be great but engine and gearbox penalty would become pretty useless...
