Red Bull RB12 TAG-Heuer

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Mimicking mercedes, ferrari, williams... This I believe is the first time red bull went with such as an aggressive outwash flaps. Could signal a change in philosophy, but Spa of all places is a very specific circuit. If we see this kind of flaps come singapore it'll be a strong sign from red bull.

Top element is trimmed out a bit, but does not seem excessive.

There might be differences in the aggression, but everyone has been running outwash since 2010 and Red Bull since the start of 2009

RedBull has had aggressive outwash flaps before.

The white elephant in the room is the fact that the cascade has no support in the centre. I bet it flexes a whole lot at high speed which in turn make the outwash fence turns inward to reduce drag.. what do you guys think?

What does this achieve, relatively speaking?

I would guess this is a low DF Configuration. It is top Flap is slimmer all along.

This is a pretty significant change. The new wing is much more agressive in terms of outwash. Together with the cut-off top element this should reduce drag alot. See how the flap adjuster is bent to aim airflow!

I don't see anything built for massive bending beside the 3 upper flaps.

The Rb5 looks like it had an infant outwash wing but not until the beak nose appeared from images I have seen while searching google. I have a model RB6 and it most definitely had an outwash wing. Not quite as complicated as the one on the rb12 but it is there none the less. I think what has been one of the truly amazing features on the RB12 is that Red Bull have designed the wing to not be quite so noticeable in this area compared to Mercedes.

Not really. The cascade concept is similar, but this year the air is routed much more agressively to the side of the car. The difference is significant.

That is a very interesting rear wing end plate, how it widens out towards the bottom of the end plate and how the slot connects all the way up to the cheese graters and how the slot flares out right after the lower plane of the main wing.

Seems pretty similar to last year. Even the vertical gill looks the quite the same.

Looks like the same wing from last year then. Not surprising actually. When something's optimized it just is...
