Ferrari F2012

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Anything related to a specific race should go in the appropriate race thread.

I don't see a point to them. They didn't perform as intended, and I'm not exactly sure they ever will. So now they're just obstructing air flow in an area of the car were teams have spent years and millions trying to minimize such obstructions.

The bodywork rules for this area and the exhaust rules are set in such a way as to be diametrically opposed to one another. It's debatable whether or not Red Bull's solution will work, and McLaren's solution's potency is also debatable. What is not debatable, I fear, is Ferrari's solution.

The shape and minimum radii mandated by the regulations concerning sidepod bodywork and its extensions virtually assure that attempts to inject exhaust like this, in veritable defiance of the exhaust's own unique regulations, will fail.

The FIA, it seems, just got this one right.

So what are the chances that Ferrari will drop the acer ducts and bring slimmer side pods to Melbourne?

Or is there just too much re-design for them to do this in such a short period of time?

Is there some other benefit (besides exhaust) that the Acer ducts could yield in terms of airflow?

The Acer ducts are primarily for hot radiator air exit. If they delete it, they'll have to completely redesign the whole cooling design of the car. It'll be like redesigning the whole mid to rear end of the car in 2 weeks. You decide if that's doable or not. Even then, there's no guarantee that it works first time out on track

I think they have already tried new cooling solutions, like the cooling gills seen at the final test weekend in Barcelona.

Whether those gills are enough to replace the functionality of the acer ducts, I couldn't really tell (but I fear not…)

Boy, those acer ducts are ugly. :?

Ugh. Famous last words.

But, of course, they're going to show up with new sidepods. There's no way you show up for a race with the Upstructortron 3000.

They did, indeed. And it looks just like this...

Re: ACER ducts -
Great (inadvertent) piece of marketing that people refer to a part of the car by the sponsor whose name is on it - shame it's not something that works!

why are teh "acer" ducts now targeted by the armchair aerodynamisists as teh rot cause of Ferrari's problems?

they have multiple issues ranging from low grip, lack of downforce, understeer to oversteer transition is too rapid, tyre wear.

A lot of this points to some fairly basic fundamentals that have gone wrong and appears to be areas where Ferrari has been in sready decline since 2007/8

This tripe is funny from a known Macca fan. In 2010, Ferrari clearly beat Mclaren, while in 2011 it could be argued that Mclaren was only better than Ferrari in engine mapping.(Look at Silverstone)

What a crock of Baloney... The MP4-25 was let down by the blown diffuser and a few DNF's. Guess what happened in 2011? Yeah, that's right, Ferrari was let down by the blown diffuser. The 25 wasn't made to enable blown diffuser, totally screwed McLaren in the long run. The 26 was. According to you, it's damned if you do and damned if you don't.

That would have hurt red bull cola!
I've found a way of ducting exhaust right to the diffuser edge like in 2011 and created a new wheel fastener that could allow sub 2 second pitstops see them here --> My 2013 F1 Concept Project

This article claims that also F2012 is experimenting with a RW F-Duct similar to RB8
