Ferrari F2012

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Anything related to a specific race should go in the appropriate race thread.

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to imply anything about legality, just that the tightening of the rules that eliminated double-diffusers made the feature impractical.

The one on the F2012 is interesting, though. It looks like it vents into the edge of the diffuser itself rather than next to it.

Ok now im with you, i also noticed now when you said it that they really are not the same thing or have the same purpose.
RB one is basically just a flap on the outside of the diffuser whereas the Ferrari one actually sends gases into the diffuser.

The resonant chamber on the exhaust is back. Am I correct in saying this is in an effort to stabilise the flow coming through the exhaust, making it, and therefore the balance more, consistent?

Is there anyway in which this would boost top speed?

I notice that slot on the side of the exhaust housing is there, but it keeps disappearing come race day.

Covered resonator chambers recently albeit the Red Bull one: http://www.somersf1.blogspot.co.uk/2012 ... nsion.html

Very interesting, thank you. Could you possibly expland on this conclusion: "Ferrari have already been using a Resonator / Expansion Chamber this season but I feel theirs is primarily focused at tuning the exhaust length rather than utilising the benefits that can be gained under off throttle events."

Because only Newey can be the aero genius of-course!

Look at the size of the resonator chamber on both Ferrari and RB: there is no way something of that size can store a volume of compressed gas big enough to blow off throttle.

IMHO on both car the main purpose of the chamber is to smooth pulses of single cylinder and changes in exhaust flow on gear shift. I think aerodynamic devices doesn't like abrupt changes in a flow.

LOL Owen, of course not, the use of the chamber will of course help with off throttle just like Red Bull's does however if we consider that Ferrari have changed exhaust position from their original course (more than likely a more ideal tuning length) the chamber should help to bridge the gap of the exhaust runners not being their optimum size. The other thing that the chamber should do is help in a specific rev range, tuning the size of the chamber would result in a differing effect on the engines performance.

I totally agree, they aren't using it to blow off throttle, however as a result of it's primary function it may also help assist in the transition from part to off throttle (aero wise)

Has the bottom of the exhaust channel been raised a little? I can't find a closeup image of the same section to compare. Looks like it might have changed.
