Lotus E21 Renault

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

"...and there, very much in flames, is Jacques Laffite's Ligier. That's obviously a turbo blaze, and of course, Laffite will be able to see that conflagration in his mirrors... he is coolly parking the car somewhere safe." Murray Walker, San Marino 1985

Very difficult to see (no better photo on line...), but Lotus had tyre squirt slots on the E21's floor:

if those are indeed slots and not holes, the gap is absolutely tiny.

They are slots as holes in the floor are not allowed with current regulations

Interesting to see that both mercedes and especially red bull choose for real slots rather then ferrari and lotus for holes connected with a legality paper slot to the edge of the floor. What are advantages and disadvantages of both 'concepts'? Vortex verses spilling air perhaps? Bleeding some the exhaust gasses those slots?

The same solution as in Spa. Nobody complained about it there, and it's a good solution to get standing water away. With all the rain predicted, I think they'll be thankful they made those slits.

Yeah but this is downhill into a corner, instead of a straight like at spa, and rly we have had many wet races at both spa and brazil, dont rly understand why they do this now...
