Marussia MR03 Pre-launch Speculation

Post

This is the speculation thread about the 2014 car. Rumors, articles, ideas and fantasies about the car can be posted here. Once the car gets officially launched, this thread will be closed and discussion continues in the official thread.

Engine speculation has its own thread; unless it directly involves the 2014 Marussia contender, please keep any speculation here: http://www.f1technical.net/forum/viewto ... ead#unread

Marussia is just too recources restricted .They have all the experience needed but clearly lack the manpower to move forward.
How could you ?
The teams in front are well organised ,have more expereince and better recources...So in reality the first year(s) will give the biggest gains as you learn the ropes.
after a while it is really cash that is bringing you forward - as the best brains will inevitably follow th money.
A small team could only hope to get hold of unknown new talent let them do whatever they dare and be happy with the results accepting the big teams will hire the best guys after a short period of time.

It is beyond me how any backmarker would be ina position to bridge the gap to the front runners with a quarter of the budget and less talent and experience...

yes you will achieve more acting as a dedicated motivated team but this will only take you so far.

so how many guys will have worked on the gearbox (case) at marussia ,how many on hydraulics t o actuate it....be it3 or 4 who could be repositioned but for what to do ?Let them do aero research ? i don´t think iit is really a matter of strength to
have less input in the box design .

Marussia, like Minardi and others before them, will always struggle. That's the nature of the F1 merry-go-round sadly. Unless they can find someone with lots of disposable cash to do a RedBull-style deal then they're always going to be backmarkers. What is impressive is how well they do compared to the big money teams ahead. It also shows how much the big teams spend to find each half second of pace advantage.

The deal to buy in the Ferrari powertrain is excellent news because it enables them to concentrate a little bit more on finding downforce - that's where the pace is.
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.

[

all the engines weigh the same and it was widely acknowledged the Cosworth unit was nearly as powerful as the mercedes unit with the renault behind it

look at it this way 10 Bhp typically results in a 0.1 sec /lap so marussia would have needed about 350Bhp to keep up with redbull

its all in the chassis

Rob White says 10bhp is about 0.267s at Monza.

One hopes that Marussia produce a neat nimble chassis that means concentrating solely on aero and vehicle dynamics. It's pointless thinking that they can spend resource looking for a loophole to exploit. Their best bet is to hope that any performance differentiator the large teams might find can be retrofitted to the chassis.
I think with the heavily proscribed aero rules any deficit will be down to power train. Any deficit between teams with the same unit will be down to greater computing power of wealthier teams.

Cosworth vs non-Cosworth laptimes: I give the benefit of the doubt to Marussia's competitor Caterham. Two years ago they started paying something like $10 million a year to ditch the Cosworth and go with Renault. And they paid additional money to Cosworth for early termination of their original 3-year contract.

I highly respect Cosworth, but surely their engine has to be regarded as a noble but distant fourth place out of the four engines of the 2.4L V8 era.

Do we have to have the same Ferrari engine news posted to 3 topics simultaneously?

Why not? The ferrari engine isn't used solely by the ferrari f1 team. Marussia and Sauber use exactly the same engine, therefore any news to the engine is either no news to the 3, or news for all 3.

So my opinion: yes, we have to.

No, that was never acknowledged. The cosworth was significantly down on power, that's why it was avoided at all costs, and used as a cheap option for the entering teams.

I heard the Cosworth's peak power was very repectable but it was a bit heavy, large and antiquated compared to the manufacturer engines.

I was told exactly the above when Williams changed from Cosworth to Renault - it was large, heavy and not very fuel efficient.
