Also although that duct is 90% covered there is another duct in between the tyre and the brake duct cover itself, so in reality it's not blocked off as much as it seems.

Furthermore increasing brake temperatures in qualifying in the wet will allow you to put more heat into the tyres and with cool down laps between the fast laps required by the power units, the risk of overheating the brakes is not a big deal.

I think the sticker is there to easily differ wether the duct is open or closed. wouldn't there be a sticker, it would be whole black in both situations.
it wasn't always there ... http://img1.auto-motor-und-sport.de/Red ... 772418.jpg :?:
Maybe is color code for Ricardos car? Ricardo as 2nd team driver also use yellow colored T roll-bar.
hmmm.... i'm not sure about that

That looks interesting. The cut was made to keep the slot in front of the tyre legal, but rbr didn't want the cut too near the wheel, so they made it end a but further up the floor.. Perhaps this benefit the efficiency of the slot.

About the stickered covers of the brake duct: my guess is that they actually run those in the race. The more the duct is closed off, the less drag, but of course that also means less cooling. I think Red Bull brings several gradations of covers along, to get just the right cooling for the least drag, with each cover being color coded.

Total will bring a new fuel mixture for Barcelona. They expect at least 2 tenth improvement per lap.

Could they be coloured so they remember that they are on, so they don't repeat Mclaren's Monaco 2010 mistake on JB's car when they left a radiator panel on?

as the covers were used with and without the colored dots, i think the covers have a different shape, size, structure. those differencenes must be so little, that they need a coolor code to use the same covers togehter

I discovered a knew vortex that passes through the inside of the rear wing endplate

I think that one comes from the top of the closest endplate, so not realy something we did not know about.

Though I agree with the earlier assessment that this is a vortex shed from the near end plate, this is a great shot nonetheless.

The lack of end plate slots on the Red Bull means the vortex is shed straight back and not off to the side like would be the case otherwise.

Every object moving through a fluid carries a theoretical "Trefftz Plane" behind it. Think of it as the wall of air the car just punched through, and minimizing the size of the "hole" left in that wall means reducing far field drag.

Image

So, because the vortex from the Red Bull is largely "covered" by the rear wing, that means it results in reduced far field drag in comparison to any solution where vortices are shed off to the side. Now, that doesn't mean this solution has less overall drag. I still think Red Bull's slot-less design results in higher induced drag. But, it's an interesting aside.

Amazing how much pre-heat put into the tyres by the blankets Image
