F1 2014 Car Comparison Thread

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

I think the braking shows the impact of the increased ERS nicely.

Doesn't make much sense to be honest. According to it, 2014 cars have faster top speed, faster acceleration, better breaks, same pace in low speed corners and are only marginally slower in high speed corners.

I find the Mercedes high crash structure very unique, might be their coup, i wonder if it's gonna get copied.
It's high to get more air over the diffuser from around the sides. Their excellent packaging is key to their aerodynamic performance.

Not sure if this is the right section, but this video is a sort of comparison :)

Really wish they would do more of those comparisons, I think they are a fantastic way of actually seeing the differences between drivers and cars.

I don't think it's that simple. We also have mandated longer chord DRS, so it should counteract loss of DF this year.
And I'm not sure I buy this:
Emerson.F wrote:The previous cars had less torque so DRS was much more powerfull with the high revving engines. (with less torue)
When you determine how fast you can potentially go, it's power that matters, as it is force times velocity. So the steady state condition when your engine produces work against drag and there's no acceleration it is power that matters.
DRS is more powerful this year in terms of gained top speed. In malaysia it was at least 20 kmh (alonso no drs 288kmh, with drs 314kmh on the back straight). Last year was maybe 13-15kmh. The problems is all gains are in the top end, and the straights are generally too short to make full use of that extra speed. In previous years drivers would go into kers abuse mode to get to get in the slipstream of leading driver and drs was only there to top it off.

TLDR. DRS is more powerful but less effective because there's no manual kers boost.

This brake duct is not what Ferrari has actually been racing, this one is the hollow axle that Ferrari tested in Bahrain after the GP.

Fantastic comparison picture, look how short the nose is compared to the red bull
And also the side pods are a lot bulkier for the red bull

And still Bulls seem to have at least the same level of downforce.
