F1 2014 Car Comparison Thread

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

And look at the rear top wishbones of these different cars, the Merc cars have much bigger triangles and they look as if they are attached directly to the engine'sm rear end* (for more stiffness? aero reasons?) while the other cars seem to attach them 'mid-way' on the gearbox... The Merc Gbox clutch area is relatively small and tight (because it hosts the turbine alone) while on the RBR and Ferrari, the same area is long and wide? could this explain that contrast?

*The new Williams engine cover, especially the bulges around the wishbone's attachement point, shows that:

So with 71.8mm bolt to bolt, I am getting the following tailpipe diameter estimates:
Mercedes: 98.2mm
Ferrari: 124.9mm
Renault: 94.4mm

And cross sections:
Mercedes: 7534mm2
Ferrari: 12252mm2
Renault: 6999mm2

Hmmm... that's less that the allowed cross section for the Renault engines. The diameter estimate from the last of the 9 pictures is a bit larger and would come very close to the allowed cross section.

The errors in my method are potentially quite large (measuring single pixels, up to 2% error per pixel, applied 4 times over), the reflections in the bolts, etc. So I guess all one can conclude is that the Ranaults and Mercedes are very close to the inferior limit (I'd guess exactly in it), that the Ferraris are close to the largest limit with a cross section area of about 5/3 that of the competition. And that I need a better measuring method or better pictures ;-)
Well, it was worth trying.
Are those averages? Could you explain the bolt to bold method (how you account the different distances etc.)? If you dont want to share here, PM me.

Georgio piola's comparison of some of the 2014 and finishes off what he believes the nose "may" look like for 2015:

If someone said to me that you can have three wishes, my first would have been to get into racing, my second to be in Formula 1, my third to drive for Ferrari.

Well on of the leading Designers of the Red Bull Aero Concept now works for McLaren, it was to be expected. And no in detail there are actually many differences.

Prodromou was the Aero boss at RB, and judging from this wing he plans to directly continue his work on the RB10 into the MP4/30. Meanwhile his former lieutenant at RB, Dan Fallows, will be heading up Aero work on the RB11.

Given that both cars are likely to be using evolved versions of the RB10's aero design, that should make for some interesting comparisons when this thread rolls around next year...

Air holes are less and smaller.
According to rumors, Mercedes said its client teams to have bigger intakes for 2015 because the new engine will require more cooling. Could that mean that Ferrari's 2015 engine could be more efficient thermically?
