Mercedes AMG F1 W07

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

I had to remove the content of the article due it being copyrighted content of autosport.com. Sharing content from paid articles in general is possible only if you summarize the article yourself, in your own words and refer to the original article. Copy paste of the original article is unfortunaly a no go.

The mercury suspension is coming back into the picture...
No need to connect the front and rear when your suspension has a built-in mechanical accelerometer that feeds into the passive-reactive heave dampers. Only Mercury is dense enough and fluid enough to do the job..

Some of the other cars appear smaller, but then you see how much space the Merc has open on the floor.

Mercedes didn't seem to find much between tyres from Q2 to Q3.
- I believe they will have had their engine turned up for both sessions.
- The track got faster for Q3 (based on the Q2/Q3 times of the SS/SS runners)
- Given the Soft is the race tyre, I don't think they will have flogged them as much as they would the disposable Super Softs in Q3.

In short, why didn't Mercedes find more pace on the SS?

That's been a characteristic of Mercedes' cars for the past 3 years - the softer tyres give them less of an advantage than for other teams. My guess would be that a good chunk of their advantage is in getting heat into the tyres, and then maintaining them at the right temperature well. That's less useful when you're using the softer, easier het-up tyres.

While Mercedes' one lap pace advantage is not as big on the SS and US tyre, they have shown to be able to run much longer stints on them. It could be their suspension setup.

Great picture. It never seizes to amaze me how design and manufacturing complexity evolve year over year.

There are two CRP inserts at the front of the floor. The ones that end in the titanium attachments. Are they funneling some air throught them? They seem to be a bit beefy for just structural reinforcement.

Also there seem to be a lot of wires. What kind of sensors would they have on there? Rear tire cameras obviously, ride height, what else?
