McLaren MCL32 Speculation Thread

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

If they aren't sure about the rear suspension geometry I foresee introduction of a an interchangeable gearbox outer shell like other teams have been running.

I thought only Mercedes was running such a gearbox in F1. Other than that, Audi had it in their LMP1 once.

The car would be incredibly fast and nimble through slow and medium speed corners while sacrificing high speed stability, however the fat tyres would take care of that.

They won't be able to lower the sidepods, because of the much bigger barge boards.

What is the connection?

I think most of the major teams will be going that route, it is only sensible, especially with the unknown of the pirelli tires next year, adjustability is the way to go. A "cassette" I believe most are calling it.

I shudder to think about the simulation software needed to optimize the rear suspension from race to race with that much adjustability.

Nothing some expensive trial and error can't help. Just hope the fix is something simple like more suspension travel.

That looks extremely weird to be honest

That short wheelbase render is glorious. Late 80's early 90's anyone?

If it's a pedal car, well, it may look good in the eye of a 4yo...

Sadly, the lengthened "airbox sails" will make a return AFAIK. Hopefully with the lowered rear wings the disgusting Volvo Wagon feeling won't come up again...

So this is a pedal car?
MP4-13 1998 - 1800mm wide Fuel tank about 110 kgs, Wheel base 2950mm

and this too?
MP4-12 1997 - 2000mm wide Fuel tank about 110 kgs, Wheel base 2900mm

Current cars: Wheelbase 3550mm, Fuel tank volume including battery is about 160 Liters or 120 kgs

I think they look beautiful, whish the FIA would fix the wheelbase at maximum 3000-3100 mm. Current cars looks like limos and honestly I think shortening up alle the cars would improve racing ...

By making the cars more twitchy and difficult to drive.

That along with a revision of rules on the body work behind the front wheel axis. This basically defines that the leading edge of the sidepod can only start behind the cockpit opening line. This needs to get shortened so that the sidepod is moved more forward.

This is easy to deal with.

Imagine it's not a Volvo, but a Saab.

A Saab Aero... hmm.

FW17, the -12 & -13 are a bit on the fat side (and with today's eyes they are so purposefully primitive), but luckily, they don't have the frumpy proportions the photochopped Pedal Car has.
