Williams FW40 Mercedes

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

The last couple of tech bosses at Williams decided against pure carbon gearboxes over the years, if true Paddy decided to change that right away.

Shows another level of ambition.

Characteristics of Composite Gearboxes:
- are generally thin monolithic shells with metallic or composite transverse bulkheads which impart stiffness and carry the “working parts.”
- are significantly lighter than traditional alloy boxes, up to 25% stiffer, can be operated at higher temperatures and are easy to modify and repair.

More inside info!

Some updates. According to Paddy we had a few new bits in Canada which you wouldn't normally see. The first one was new Merc engine version 2.1 which allows us to have a race+ mode effectively giving us 0.1per lap in the race.
New 32mm brakes with new ducts - old ones were 28mm.
New floor which can be "stalled" whatever it means reducing the drag. On certain circuits it can give up to 0.2s per lap. As far as I understand Lance only had it in practice in Canada.

Looking ahead we are getting significant upgrades worth 0.3s per lap in Austria and as mentioned before, we are testing so called Bspec with new suspension and gearbox in Hungary.

Basically speed dependent vortex sweep. At high speeds the Vorticles that seal the rear floor move outwards or inwards to no longer seal it off. Because of the high rake the ingress of outside air helps reduce the floor drag and the wake gets filled in.

Hmm. I wonder if the photos are consistent with my vortex sweep hypothesis? haha. Those two new vertical vanes seem to create two vortices that interact closely. One is in front of the barge board the other behind...

F1 TECHNOLOGY T-WINGS
One to two percent more downforce

http://www.auto-motor-und-sport.de/form ... isch%29%29

Summary:

- Williams tested a whole cascade in the wind tunnel

- The former Williams technician Pat Symonds, now in the service of the TV station Sky, tells us: "I am surprised that there are not more elements. We had a solution at Williams last year with a whole cascade of wings in the area in the trial. "

- But what does the wing bring in airy heights? Measured by its modest dimensions the results are amazing. The engineers speak of two to six points downforce, depending on the design. Two at one element, six at three. Three points correspond to approximately one percent of the contact pressure, based on the total car.
It does not go without air resistance. If, for example, four points of downforce are added, the air resistance increases by two points.

Interesting that they have a low downforce front wing, but the rear wing looks the same to me.
