Pretty simply really. That's not to say it was a good call.
But that´s the thing, Mediums gave no indication whatsoever that they would last longer.

Well, as i said, that's what separates the Alonsos and Hamiltons from the Barrichellos and Massas.
Even Massa has grown some spine in that regard!
For Sure!!

Doesn't the harder tyre always last a bit longer?

That´s not what DeLaRosa said, one second slower but they last much longer

And they´re one second quicker when they´re new, once they have some laps (maybe 10 :?: ) difference must be much less if any. I guess that must be the reasoning

Who made the longest stint and with what compound?

Does that mean anything?

Teams assume risks, sometimes they get it right, sometimes they dont, so you can´t assume if someone did it it was the best strategy

Anycase, it was Chilton, softs for 37 laps... and he finished the last one

Edit: ups sorry, it was Kvyat with mediums for 39 laps

Yes if the Top 5 longest stints was on Soft then it´s safe to say Mediums never gave any indication of being the best long run tire.

Thanks. Edit: Nice Kvyat on 39 laps. Thanks again.

Also Bottas and Massa. I know Massa ran Medium twice but did Bottas do the same? He ran all softs right?
Bottas middle stint was 14 laps longer then Massa on Mediums. Again don´t know if Bottas had Mediums or not.

It doesn't matter what the reality is because we only know that with hindsight. You're questioning why Mercedes put Hamilton on primes so all that matters is what Mercedes believed at the time and what the current situation was.

We know Rosberg had 38 laps to do when he pitted for softs and Hamilton had 31 to do when he pitted for mediums. We also know from the radio messages we heard during the race that they intended for Rosberg to pit again and for Hamilton to go to the end. We can only assume that they thought the mediums would do 31 laps quicker than using softs and pitting again.

Not really because the teams have teams checking the competitors and how long they have gone on their stints.
So when we look at the info we can use what´s available up to Hamilton´s stop.

Anycase the indications come from FP1, FP2 and FP3, that´s the reason Dela Rosa said that, they knew they last longer

Then in race, as Waywardism said, they only knew there was 31-32 laps remaining and they had to make a choice. Assuming softs will last that long is a posibility, but usually not the fastest so it´s only those who have the position (Alonso) who can take that risk and try to defend the position.

Since Hamilton needed to overtake, that was not an option for him. Then he only had two choices, mediums for the remaining 31 laps, or softs for two more stints.

Hamilton chose the first, and Rosberg the second. I don´t see anything weird there

Usually yes but this race started in the wet and we had 2 safety cars which kinda screws that up.
