2014 Abu Dhabi GP - Yas Marina

Great job from Lewis, I'm not really a fan (or a Merc fan) but I respect his talent and this wdc was very well deserved!

Ps to the trolls who reckon this season was boring, you clearly haven't been watching!

This song sums up 2014: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otCpCn0l4Wo
It even contains hammer time!

Lewis ended the season in style, poor Rosberg, he really didn't deserve this ending as I was hoping for another 1-2. Merc really need to sort this out for 2015! Rosberg's sportmanship was outstanding I must say. Losing a title but keeping his head high

What a season it was for the merc-lewis fans =D> . I hope 2015 will be even better, hard to beat this one but you never know ;)

I hope Merc makes Lewis put nr.1 on his car, as he is planning on keeping 44...

ps: I guess that Lewis will get hammertime tonight with Nicole!

Maybe not the most exciting of races, but a very deserved outcome for Hamilton. It would IMO have been a sad day for F1 if he was to be denied this championship due to mechanical problems. Rosberg did little wrong this year but he was simply beaten on pace.

What is striking though is the pace advantage the Mercs have managed to hold over the season. They were more than 1 second faster than the rest at the beginning of the season, and they still are. A Merc with a tuned down engine and worn tires can apparently still hold of an inspired drive by Massa on new supersofts. If they wanted they could perhaps have lapped the whole field up to Button.

I guess that the only ones who have a realistic chance of getting anywhere near the Mercs over the winter are Red Bull and Williams.

But if the midfield racing is anywhere as exciting as it was this year then you won't hear me complaining.

I actually really want Lewis to put the 1 on the car, maybe with a push from Merc and a bit of thought he'll go for it.

Well done to Merc, Lewis & Nico for all the success in 2014.

Mercedes built a phenomenal car this year, one that will be remembered for years to come. Maybe it was boring for some people, but we can hardly blame Mercedes for that. I thank and applaud Mercedes for allowing, for the most part, their drivers to race on equal terms which gave us an intense and enjoyable championship battle. The pressure is now on the rest of the teams to catch up, and give us more than a two horse race in 2015!

Think Hamilton deserved to be world champ - he had the measure of Rosberg most of the time in the race - but it still hasn't, for me, validated the notion that he's the clear fastest driver in the sport.

I always go back to Schumacher being generally faster than Rosberg in 2012 (the stats don't tell the full story) at 43, on Rosberg was undoubtedly the one lap specialist this year.

Who is "they" ?
and
How did they want to accomplish this deed when "they decided early to 'down' the power on the Mercedes of Lewis to prevent a repeatance of a similar occasion earlier in the year" ?

What Hamilton said seemed like trying to revoke ongoing team's actions thru external software manipulation of his race car's on-board system via communications from the pits, which forever was illegal and as far as I know still is.
It was quite odd, first the team saying "let us know when you want the car turned back up", later Ham saying, sounding almost desperate "please dont turn my car up the pace is fine"

Hamilton sets his car for the race. He admitted to it in a cryptic way twice this weekend, and Toto also revealed the same after Q3. Notice how happy he was after missing pole? There is so much evidence he is focusing on race pace and using his speed advantage to make up for quali. So to him starting second is a victory over the rest of the field. I really don't think Rosberg is as fast as Hamilton. However I acknowledge that Rosberg has made less mistakes in qualifying.

Here is the second time this weekend Hamilton hinted of his race setup. I can't find Toto's quote though..
Q: (Livio Oricchio - Globoesporte.com) Lewis, can you explain to us more about the turning point at Spa-Francorchamps? What happened exactly when suddenly you started winning, winning, winning - probably this is the main reason you are here, celebrating the world title?

LH: Yeah. Well, Spa was a low moment. It was a very difficult scenario to be in and going back years ago, I wouldn't have reacted the way I did this year. I would have chosen another way which wouldn't have been a positive and I guess with age, as I said, and just maturing and having a different perspective on life, I think I handled it a different way, I really thought for the following days and really turned my focus to a different area. I came back to the next races with a slightly different approach and I won't explain exactly what I did because I need to bring it to the next races next year but I did tweak some of my approach throughout the weekend which helped me get those wins. I've still got some improvements to make, qualifying was good this year but could be better. It would make it much easier if I could get qualifying sorted because the race pace is very much there. Inside the team? Nothing really changed, I don't believe. The team has been amazing. It's been very hard for them. They've wanted both of us to win, having to be very balanced but ultimately they've done an exceptional job. It is a great group of people in this team; t
here's a lot of love in this team, a lot of passion and it's been a real privilege to work with these people

I would suggest that is just simple risk management by Lewis - he knew that he could get to the end with his current power levels and simply didn't want to take any risks at all.

But the point was that the radio messages made it sound like turning the engine up/down is done from the pit which would be illegal

I believe what Lewis was talking about is that he didn't want the team to order/ask him to change the engine mode (MGP trying to fend off Massa and ensure the win), rather than the team itself turning the wick up from inside the garage. To be honest i dont see anything suspicius and/or illegal here. Well done to Lewis for his second championship and hats off to Rosberg for his late show of sportsmanship. It was a great year, roll on 2015! =D>

IMO, the only possible outcome for yesterday's race is for Lewis Hamilton to win. If it goes to Nico, I cant imagine how the podium celebration will be like and the media will sure goes into overdrive mode, criticizing the sports, Bernie and even Merc for favoring German driver.

It must be a big relieve not just for LH fans that he won his 2nd WDC, and also for the entire F1 community too.

Toto Wolff has no problem with it and why should he. 44 is a special number for him, he won karting titels with that number and now a F1 world title. A bit like Rossi's 46.

In the end, both Rosberg and Hamilton had 3 car failures that caused them to drop completely out of the points. Once we shake that out, we see that hamilton is 67 points clear of Rosberg (42 without double points). The fact that Hamilton got hit with his 3 failures earlier in the season than Rosberg did means that the championship appeared somewhat closer than it really was. The reality is that Hamilton beat Rosberg in a pretty devastating way - he was 6 whole race wins ahead (6 * 7 = 42), 9 if you include double points.
Well said, you put words to my thoughts.
