I don't think you're giving him enough credit. His Brawn/Honda time was the first TP experience he had. I can't comment on the tech director position, but in my memory I have never thought of him as a tech guy, but rather the brilliant strategist that made those fantastic calls on strategy in Hungary 1998, Imola 2004, etc

When Flavio Briatore is free to participate in F1 from 2013 and on, I believe the wisest think DrZ could do is to hire him to replace Ross Brawn, Flavio could then lure Alonso away from Ferrari to take MS' seat, some coup?

Flavio should never be allowed back into F1.

It'd take him a year or two to ruin Mercedes reputation with some underhanded garbage.

to me Mr.alonso is the single guy worth a lot of money at this time and Briatore would easily qualify as number 2 behind Mr.Ecclestone in F1 ....a hard hit to take for the reds if that happened.

From granprix.com:

Ross Brawn is back at the helm of Mercedes GP after missing the Spanish GP on medical grounds.

Brawn said in Monaco that he had been diagnosed with an irregular heart beat and that doctors wanted to determine the cause, which they have now done, and are happy for him to travel again

"I think it had something to do with Manchester United!" Brawn laughed.

Yeah right...

Regular viewers of the forum will know that driver comparison discussions on this technical forum inevitably end up with the highly prized padlock medallion. This unique award can only be earned by disciples of what we call "fanboi ying yang".

In order to give this prestigious award we would need to take the Schumacher debate into it's own special thread. However after a long all night deliberation by the moderators (we are in different time zones so it was a very long all night conversation) we have realised that this forum is not worthy to host such a precious and special conversation, so we have sent the Schumacher debate to the great forum in the sky where believers can bow down in eternal wonderment, and unbelievers will grind and nash their teeth for eternity.

Feel free to inwardly reflect on this miraculous accession, give your nearest loved one with a loving hug. If the memories are too painful and cause irrational irritation then go and give the nearest lump of concrete a kick with your bare toes. Repeat as required until your loved one gets a migraine or your toes fall off.

Feel free to give the lump of concrete a loving hug too.

If you get mixed up and kick your nearest loved one it'll be the perfect analogy for what a driver discussion does to this technical forum.

Then having dispelled the emotional baggage, please do come back here and talk objectively about the engineering team that is Mercedes AMG F1.

ps the thread will be in purgatory for a few hours. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purgatory

According to Italian media (Autosport) he is hired by Ferrari...
is this good or bad for MGP?

He'll be missed no doubt, but I'd like to see who his replacement is.

I don't think it's necessarily either. Obviously as Zyphro said he will be missed but there are others to fill his spot. Costa for instance is a very good Aerodynamicist who learned from the best, Rory Byrne. Mercedes is on it's way up and I'm sure they'll have no problems getting someone new in if they decide to go outside the company. It's definitely good for Ferrari but I don't think it'll knock Mercedes back anything significant.

Right, it'll interesting to see who they replace him with. Doubly interesting is the timing. Mercedes began work on the W03 in May of 2011, so it'd be reasonable to assume that they're now on the opening stages of developing of the W04 we've all been waiting for. (It'll be the first car to have both Costa and Willis's input from the start.) Since Bigois apparently won't be leaving until September, will Mercedes still use him as well for the W04, or begin the transition right now?

I´d think
Mercedes GP has enough front line guys and it was very clear not all will stay .Bell as TDcoming from Renault/Mclaren ,a superb choice in my view
Costa a sensible guy ,he was the youngest ever TD in f1 with Minardi ... and worked along Rory byrne when the other guy Willis worked with Newey...what else would you need they have as a combo worked for the top teams in F1 but alöso know how to work on semi existant budgets as well...

I think Bigois is now on the traditional "gardening leave" until he goes to Maranello. But most definitely Mercedes are in the initial phase of designing the W04. It will be very interesting to see how Costa & Willis get on with the new project.

Half a year gardening leave? Seems rather short if he starts September
