Paddy Lowe, Chief Technical Officer: It was a good day. We did all of the things that we wanted to do and we had no problems with either car. We have some new aerodynamic and mechanical parts here, and we were able to do all of the relevant testing for those, while completing our tyre programmes with Felipe and Lance. Felipe did a solid job all day, and showed really competitive pace on both high and low fuel. Lance’s main job, having never driven here before, was to learn the circuit; which he’s done very quickly. He’s shown reasonable pace for this stage of the weekend, and he hasn’t used the ultrasoft yet. There’s still a lot of work to do overnight to keep finding extra performance, but we’re hopeful we can have a good day tomorrow and score some points on Sunday.

Felipe Massa: I think we’ve had a very good day. The car felt good on both new and used tyres. I was very happy with the feeling I had in the car. Everything we tried on set-up seemed to improve it even more. We just need to keep everything under control for tomorrow, and hopefully we can be as competitive as we were today.

Lance Stroll: It’s a great track, I really like the rhythm and it’s just good to be home. It was a good day getting used to the track, but I have to treat it as just another race at the end of the day as everything stays the same. However, it’s great to have those Canadian flags in the grandstands. On the out lap I looked at the fans and saw them waving and cheering and that is really cool. I didn’t get a chance to put on the ultrasofts, so we will see what they are like tomorrow. We were focused on some other things, so it was just part of the plan. It’s still quite close in the midfield, as it has been all year, and everyone has been doing different programmes, so we will see how it is in qualifying.

The updates helped Massa beat the Force Indias, so that's good.
Stroll... has a lot of room for improvement.

It's hard to disagree with that.

But good result none the less from Massa.

what would you say that if Alonso move to Williams for 2018 and Williams start using Honda PU 2019😂

Well, massa is not a driver having high adaptability, but once the car suits him, he can deliver, so I think the 2016 qualifying record is no doubt very bad, but keeping 1s gap from team mate definitely showed that he delivers this year, even stroll maybe not fast indeed

I'm not sure Alonso would sign any contract with the letters H O N D A listed anywhere at this point.

İn my theory he signs before williams make deal with Honda. A fate like Button. Button once raced for honda and then where he had gone Honda follow him.

McLaren ended its long victory drought in Formula 1 on Saturday night when it triumphed in the resurrected teams’ boat race at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

As F1’s new owners Liberty Media and Red Bull moved to rejuvenate an event that had been a regular in Canada until the late 1990s, all teams apart from Ferrari, Mercedes and Force India entered the fun.

Joined by a host of rival teams including one from the FIA, one led by F1’s sporting chief Ross Brawn, one from fans and one from F1 commercial chief Sean Bratches, the event drew a huge crowd including team personnel, media and fans.

Teams were given raft building kits and had an hour to create their vessel before the start.

Overseen by F1 race director Charlie Whiting, McLaren’s effort – helped by Olympic rowing medallist Tom Stallard, who is Stoffel Vandoorne’s race engineer – led from the start and was dominant on the race across the Olympic rowing lake and back.

Second place went to Toro Rosso with Sauber coming home third.

McLaren’s success comes against the backdrop of its current struggles in F1 where it has faced a difficult three years with Honda engine.

Joking afterwards, just a few days after Fernando Alonso said he would only stay at McLaren in 2018 if the team triumphed before September, racing director Eric Boullier laughed: “We won. Fernando now has to stay…”

Qualifying Notes

- Felipe Massa qualified seventh and Lance Stroll 17th for the Canadian Grand Prix

- Both drivers went out early in Q1 on the ultrasoft tyre and continued to improve throughout the session. Felipe made it comfortably through to Q2 in P5. Lance however fell into the drop zone ahead of his final lap in Q1 and will start the Canadian Grand Prix in 17th

- In Q2 Felipe set a 1:13.012 on his opening run. He wasn’t able to improve on his time but still made it comfortably through to Q3 in P7

- In the final session Felipe set a 1:12.902 on his opening run. As the chequered flag fell he improved his time with a 1:12.858, which was good enough for a strong seventh on the grid

Paddy Lowe, Chief Technical Officer: We’re very happy with the result on Felipe’s side of the garage, it’s a very well deserved seventh place. He was setting very competitive times throughout the session. We weren’t able to match the three teams in front of us, but we certainly put some distance to those behind. It was a tricky session for Lance and he will be disappointed with his position for his first home race. On an evolving track he wasn’t able to match the necessary pace needed at the time he needed to. It’s always a bit tricky to manage tyre temperatures in Canada, especially this year where the tyre temperature windows are particularly acute. We’re looking forward to the race tomorrow. Hopefully we can put on a show for all of the fans here and pick up some points. I also want to say a big thank you to the teams back at the factory for the number of upgrades here this weekend, both on the chassis and the power unit, which contributed to the pace we were able to show today.

Felipe Massa: It was a great qualifying session for me. I’m very happy with everything we’ve done this weekend and I’m very happy with the lap. We were competitive today, but seventh was the best position we could have achieved. The race is tomorrow though, and I was quite happy with the pace in the race simulations yesterday. I’m looking forward to the race as I think we have good pace to be able to fight and score some good points.

Lance Stroll: We went out at the beginning and stayed on the same set of tyres the whole session. I felt the grip was getting better, but I think the track was just improving. I think the decision not to pit for new tyres towards the end of Q1 had a bit to do with me not getting through, but it is too hard to say. You can always look back afterwards and say we should have done this and we should have done that, but we are in the position we are in. Obviously, we are starting a little bit further back than we would want to, but it is a long race, overtaking is possible and you never know what will happen. We have to stay focussed and positive. This is my first home Grand Prix, which is great and I am aiming to enjoy it.
