Codemasters have this morning revealed a brand new gameplay mode for their upcoming racing title F1 2012, entitled Champions Mode. In Champions Mode players will take on each of the six FIA Formula One World Champions currently competing in the 2012 World Championship in singular race scenarios specifically designed for pick up and play functionality. Starting with Kimi Räikkönen, followed by Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button, Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso and then Michael Schumacher, players must defeat each driver to unlock the next challenge. Sounds a lot interesting. This is seen in Virtua Tennis Game tournament mode, where we start from Milan courts, then Aus, French, USO and the ultimate challenge will be to beat Federer/Nadal at Wimbledon (Though they which player comes at which courts is randome-not fixed).

Racing against Schumacher will be awesome; only if I can never beat him; no point in making a game where a 100 laps of practice will help you beat the champ.
Finishing second is being the first one of losers....

In my opinion its a watered down scenario mode, it needs more to it.
Anyone play F1: World Grand Prix on N64? Now that had a great scenario mode where you had real life incidents to contend with like trying to win the Hungarian GP with Damon Hill's Arrows 8)

Hehe, had the game too. Remember a scenario with Ralf & Michael where you had to do some weird tactics to win the challenge.

Nothing special about this scenario-mode tbh.

just sounds like another feature for the arcade side of it. I get this image of the old ps1/ps2 games where it was all scripted and once you worked it out you could complete it every time.

I'd be happy enough though if they balanced it out and brought in the formation lap or something like that for us 'sim' fans. But there are so many other things they could of spent there time on than this. You just have to look at the codemasters forum for that, yet they seem to pick random ideas out a hat that no ones mentioned.

Are they still keeping proving grounds? if so or not so its still surely more or less the same thing?

Proving grounds is being changed to Young Driver Test from what I can tell.
This new Champions Mode seems like its a replacement for last years Time-Trial Mode.

The video shown in my post is produced from ingame footage, the most impressive thing in my opinion about it is the sound of the Red Bull right at the end.

Thanks to Codemasters here is a little more info on the Young Drivers Test amongst other things.

Codemasters have today confirmed that F1 2012 will launch on September 21st in the UK on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Alongside the announcement, Codemasters also released a new developer’s diary, which features new gameplay footage and details several of F1 2012’s new features including the Young Driver Test, which will act as the game’s tutorial mode, teaching the player about the nuances of racing a Formula One car.

I wonder why they haven't created a proper 'scenario' mode?

I miss that; it was quite fun playing F1 2000 on the ps one :D .

Will all come down to licensing no doubt.
As F1 has become more popular in mainstream entertainment the price FOM will ask for certain things will rise. Was probably quite cheap to add stuff back when games like F1 World Grand Prix were out.
What I would like to see Codemasters do is like EA did with the license at the end when they produce F1 Challenge. That was a great game and mostly just because seasons rolled on and you had livery and driver changes.
