During races, are the radio comm between pits and drivers available in their entirety (LIVE) or do teams decide what they want/don't want to release ? I just wonder in the context of the race. Certain dialogues during the race can obviously be revealing info to opponents, so I just wonder because if those channels are open for anyone to listen in then what we hear could very well "deception"

I believe all of the communications are observed by the stewards (hence Ferrari were caught in 2010 for team orders).

Also, all of the communications are open to all the other teams (several instances in F1 Race Review Videos where one team alerts their driver and then anther team updates their own driver with the opponent's situation). Each team (or at least the big teams) have personnel back at the factory that monitor all of the data and transmissions to provide support for the team at the races.

The broadcast is limited to whatever is picked up by the director of the broadcast.

Any knowledge to the contrary would be appreciated.

They used to scramble their transmissions but the FIA put the kybosh on that,,,so now they speak Italian. LOL

As I recall, the radios are encrypted so teams can only hear their own transmissions, but the FIA hear everything. They then choose what to broadcast. So teams rely on the TV feed for snippets of info from other teams.

That's why swearing is effective, the message can't be broadcast hence other teams don't hear critical information.

I was surprised to hear non-English transmissions last week, I imagine there'll be words behind the scenes about that because the stewards wouldn't know what was being said. However Jaime Alguersuari provided instant translation on the commentary on BBC radio.

So, IOW, it's not totally clear whether or not the transmissions are open to all teams or encrypted I guess.

It should be in regulations somewhere. It would be nice to know so we can better interpret what we hear, I suppose.

To me that means that teams have access, does not matter for my purpose what the source is. They have access to those, live and during the races.

I have been thinking about this for some time. At the last gp when Alonso says over the radio that he is using 100% power and asks what to do I was a bit concerned that such info was out there. But now I understand it might have very well been bluff.

Richard, they have been doing that for a few races now. The teams can hear all transmissions in real time
