Renault Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Really, where have you got this Information?
from Abiteboul himself at renault RS17 presentation.
Oh wow, missed that then.
You won't catch me driving a race car that I have built.

With the token system out of the way, how much can teams independently alter their power units?

Red Bull would be the non-factory team with the most money to throw at such a project.

Maybe Illmor will now be building an engine for Red Bull that will be branded Aston Martin. I feel this is why they went with Mobil1 backing. I think Red Bull Aston Martin might be the go for 2019.

That probably won't happen as AM uses Mercedes engines on their DB11. You have a higher chance of VAG entering F1 and siding with Red Bull, than seeing a bespoke AM engine.

So the new Renault PU is apparently no slouch in the HP department!

Although Red Bull have found a way to squat their rear end with DRS open which might be a major factor.

Or it could be that they are running less downforce/drag.

I did mention the squat to reduce DF under DRS - some pics over here: http://www.f1technical.net/forum/viewto ... 74#p678272

11kmh faster than hulkenberg's renault and 17 kmh faster than TR. That seems almost too much to be all down to aero/drag.

Surely speed trap data from the first day of winter testing is the most useless of useless data.

With more downforce on the cars, they are coming out of the corners at much higher speeds.
Redbull probably coming out of the corners 10km/hr faster than the other cars and so it has a head start to reach its peak speed at the end of the straight.
With these new rules the cars will appear to be more slippery because they are exiting corners much much faster than last year. With the varying quality of chassis, it will also be more difficult to tell which engine is more powerful.

Or it´s just testing you know?

STR is 17 clicks slower than RBR so either STR has a car that car drive upside down at 5km/h or it´s just testing, nobody has the wick turned up to eleven or even remotely near it.
