The sudden performance bump is almost all aero related and has nothing to do with KERS, KERS has been the teams only true positive since the beginning of the season. Some would have you think that KERS is what made them slow to begin with but that is obviously not the truth.
Yes, McLaren's main problem was clearly that the rear aerodynamics were quite hopeless. We saw signs of that already in pre-season testing, when they opted to run the 2008 rear wing to get some sort of balance in the car. The car had zero grip in the rear, so for the first half of the season they were left with no choice but to soften up the rear suspension into the extreme, which led to all sorts of handling oddities. When they finally produced a HUGE double diffuser, the car improved by more than a full second a lap!
The McLaren KERS has been good all season, I remember Hamilton making a bunch of overtaking maneuvers already in Australia.
