PURE engine company moves to Toyota's Cologne factory

Craig Pollock's PURE engine company will move to Toyota Motorsport's facilities in Cologne after securing a deal with the Japanese car maker, AUTOSPORT has learned.

PURE, which has been operating in its France base so far, is set to make its debut in Formula 1 in 2014, when the sport switches to V6 turbo engines.

Speaking to AUTOSPORT, Pollock confirmed the move to Cologne - where the Toyota F1 team used to operate from.

"The situation is that we have signed an exclusive agreement with TMG," Pollock told AUTOSPORT.

"It's been signed for quite a long time, no question about it, and Toyota are currently preparing the front office complex that's linked to the test benches and to the assembly units.

"So we can basically have all the parts that we are currently manufacturing delivered to our assembly facility so that the prototypes will be built actually at the Toyota facility, which will become the PURE facility."

Pollock said the move made sense as it will save his company valuable time that it can use to be better prepared once the engines take to the track.

"The reasoning behind it is quite simple," he added. "We obviously would've looked at constructing our own facilities and constructing our own test benches. There is a cost factor and there is a time factor.

"But the biggest thing was in reality the time factor, because to build anything on that scale and certainly to build a test bench, it would take a year and a half minimum to have it up and running and to be calibrated.

"Toyota, they've got the absolute best test benches I think in the world for a Formula 1 engine. They have the most up to date, and have so many of them that for me it was logical to go down that road, because we should be ready to be on the bench in the end of July."

He said PURE will continue to operate from France, however.

"The idea is that we will have the main design and assembly team, the people who have to work on the test benches definitely based out of Cologne. There has to be one unit that is working fully there, and we will normally carry on with units in France as well."

I'm pretty sure Red Bull will be hedging their bets between the two options for 2013. From Adrian Newey's perspective trying to steal a march on the engine front is an option too good too miss. Renault can easily be bought or fobbed off. They could give PURE engines to Red Bull and Renault to Torro Rosso.

Either that or Red Bull has discovered that engine development is not part of the RRA, and just like WB xplained earlier, you can pour as much money into it as you want to get an advantage, which would fit Mateschitz modus operandi like nothing else.

That wasn't exactly what I meant by Didi Mateschitz's MO. I meant some other points:

When Didi is faced with a problem of not having a partner for a business purpose because all the players are already taken by competitors he typically simply buys himself the hole business. He did this with Jaguar when he wasn't happy with Sauber any more as a partner. He did it again with Toro Rosso when it became too difficult to place young drivers at other teams. When the press in Austria did not give his enterprises enough coverage he simply bought himself a complete TV station and news paper. When F1 did not cover the USA he bought himself a NASCAR team. This is what I mean by MO.

Another aspect is the way he staffs his operations and Jaguar was the blue print. The essential aspect is technical competence, so he got himself the finest engineer in the business and gave him carte blanche to do what he wants. Newey practically ran that company from day one. But he has nothing to do with all the nitty gritty bullshit he doesn't want to be bothered with. So Didi got him a young bimbo - Horner - whom he can place in the line of fire for the press when something goes wrong.

That kind of MO we can find in PURE as well. You have a really impressive engineering staff and you have a bimbo - Pollock - to run the dogs and pony show. You see that money isn't an object when it come to the investment into the company. They get the finest of everything that is avaliable - the Toyota engine facility.

The point that xpensive mentions is less the MO but the basic business reckoning. At the moment we have to anticipate that power trains spending from the budget years 2013 to 2016 - which is one Concord period - might not come under any control at all. At the same time homologation will probably be lifted, so that engine manufacturers may supply inferior engine specs to customers. We do not know for sure but it is a very imminent possibility. In that situation Red Bull could not maintain top team status without control over their own power train and power train budget. Relying on Renault to match Mercedes and Ferrari in engine development would be foolish. So this would be the trigger or business rational for the PURE aquisition.
