AFAIK they were allowed to adjust them 1 or 2 times a lap. But IIRC they have used it in order to refine the setup of the car rather than trying to minimise the disadvantage of the dirty air.

We once had the most amazing drs system in f1, McLaren invented it and it was more commonly known as the F-duct.

The problem was everybody used it and thus it had the same effect on overtaking as KERS had, none at all.
