Manor's oversteer and rear brakes locking.

Post

What may be the cause of massive manor rear locking & oversteer? The car is just adjusted very, very bad or poorly built?

Few examples: from singapore practice session

from malaysia:

from singapore again:

and from silverstone:

Stevens and Merhi are really brave to drive these cars =D>

Just spun on the exit of 130R. Looks like their aero just randomly stalls.

The most likely cause of the rear end problems on this car is the kinetic energy harvesting and application.
All the other teams have had this problem and taken varying development times to sort it out.

With the computer controlled transmissions working sequentially, the shifts have to perfectly balance the torque requirements of the kinetic energy motor/generator or else the rear traction of the car is upset both on deceleration and on corner exit.

The drivers have to adapt in F1 to this 'novel' way of driving and they find that they no longer have full control of the car in pitch and lateral g.

It is a sad reflection of the loss of driver skills today compared to in pre aero/computer control days.

It is one reason among many that is slowly destroying the sport.

Like mertol, I'd lean more towards the aero stalling, especially given what happened to Stevens in the dirty air at the weekend...

LIONER, Great example of noticing a consistent trait in a car over the course of a season.

The loss of the rear end of these cars occurs mainly on lining the cars up for the corners not at actual corner entry.
At this point DF has little effect.

the senior aero person at Jaguar F1 told me their car was bad because the rear wing stalled with pitch under braking
the reason Mr Irvine's only good result was at Monaco
stalled because the tunnel test contracter was using a tunnel too small for the model, causing a false stall AoA measurement
a common fault - tunnel size is very costly

I agree with you. Being a very low budget customer team, I don't think they have the latest ECU settings or the best equipment or car setup, so when power is applied just a little bit too soon, and power not being delivered smoothly or energy recovery too abrupt, so spin occurs.

But 130R? With that enormous df how can you spin from applying power?
