Steps into Motorsport engineering.

Not sure if this is the right place to post this but i have a few questions which someone with experiance may or may not be able to assist me with, Im 25 years old and a Royal Navy Aerospace Engineer with specialising in Avionics (electronics) on the Lynx Helicopter, i love my job, but since youth Motorsport has been my passion, especially the engineering side of F1, all naivety aside, how would someone like me get onto the first rung to get to this 'dream' destination (be it lower level formula) as i said, i love my job, but i cant help thinking i should have gone to Uni instead, although i dont consider uni a viable option now.
