Renault Clutch Assembly

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

What is going on with this 'clutch' assembly? You can see the gold clutch 'basket' in the top photo. It is missing the center drives and clutch discs. What is the subassembly that has all the hoses are going to? Is this the clutch release bearing/mechanism? Control valve for a hydraulic release cylinder? Why the large vent like hoses?

Is this assembly attached to the engine or transmission?

My guess is the cylindrical shaped object with the large hoses is not a part of the clutch but a pump of some decription which is taking its drive from the flywheel

I was considering buying one of the more expenses items. Can only afford one item thought, so the choice is hard.

I don't know about the large possibly vent hose, but I think the others show how they use it as a slipper clutch for those launches without tire spin. ;)

The item with the large hose is the actuator that changes gears via the selector drum. This is an older gearbox, so its not a quick shift set up, later Renaults use two selector drums\\actuators. I'm not aware of these being "cooled" but I do know they suffer problems with the fluid moving around, just as with a suspension damper.
The clutch sits at the bottom of the assembly and the plate is bolted to the front of the gearbox. so that the actuator sits to the right of the case, when viewed from the front.

Memento have a load of great F1 hardware, I've been along to their unit, with a view to using their images on the blog, as a kind of contra deal, advertising their stuff in return for using the images. It needed the teams permission, it seems the teams declined :(

I think scarbs is right there, this is a gearbox front plate it looks like 2005 at the latest. Renault went to two actuators in 2007 I think.

The gold basket holds the clutch (which is missing, along with the springs) although the clutch nose is ty-wrapped to the front plate - the small round bit in the bottom picture - which fixed the actuator to the springs

The large pipes are for cooling, there is a barrel position sensor on top of the actuator (red connector) and a clutch position sensor (yellow connector) which needed cooling. The final (blue connector) was for the layshaft speed sensor. The mainshaft sensor isn't fitted, which is why there is a hole on the plate.

Shame it's missing the basket, they are a work of art themselves. No bigger than a mordern motorcycle type either.
