Alonso leads German GP from start to finish 22 Jul 2012
Fernando Alonso has won the German GP after leading every single lap of the race. The Spaniard start from pole, and while being under threat, he was never passed. Sebastian Vettel finished in second place while Jenson Button is third. Their result though is still under investigation, as Vettel's passing move was a little dubious.

I surely hope Vettel wins it this time. I think every top driver should win his home GP at least once.
And for my own personal knowledge, is it Prost that holds the current record for the most wins at his home GP? 1981, 1983, 1988, 1989, 1990 & 1993

I believe you are correct. I know Schumacher has won on German soil 8 or 9 times, but half of those were listed as European Grand Prixs at Nurburgring.

Schumacher's won the German GP 4 times - 1995, 2002, 2004, 2006 - so I think he still tops that one. **edit: what am I talking about? Ignore!** One more maybe? Don't think so, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the Merc on the podium.
I actually think we are beginning to see the season settle down, without random things happening. Red Bull seem to have got their exhaust solution to work, which makes them strong, and Ferrari are in a similar position as the past few years - strong, but not quite there. McLaren look to be a bit too hard on their tyres, but will possibly improve this weekend with big upgrade package, so we could actually be looking at the same three teams fighting it out as usual, albeit with Lotus and Merc much closer than in recent years.
These new hard tyres will be interesting though. Only being tested this weekend, but will be interesting if they do have a wider operating window, as is said by Pirelli. If that's the case it might remove some of the tyre problems that have caused some of the unexpected results.

I have a feeling that whoever can manage the degradation the best will win this race. It's very simple, the stadium sector punishes the tires like no other, especially the rears, this is because of the banking inherent in that section of the track. The squarer profile of the Pirellis will demand a car with a very good front end to avoid destroying the rears especially under power. In fact there are only 3 3/4 heavy braking phases on this track, the rest of the time is spent under relatively little breaking and essentially powering out of corners.
If it's hot the usual characters will be at the front.
As an aside I would like to mention that perhaps as the summer months wane, and the temperatures begin to drop we could see a Mercedes resurgence as the climate plays into the strengths of the car.
