I guess you really need that tyre width when having to pass 1000+bhp to the road with rear wheels only!

Image

19" (!!) x 15" wheels!

And while I am here, a bit more info on the car: https://www.stuttcars.com/porsche-models/917/30-can-am/

(clic on the link at the top to see all versions of the 917, it is also very interesting, especially that 917 Spyder with a 16 cylinders engine!)

Very nice. I remember quite well the 917/20 TC.

Do you know where/when the pic with the 917/20 was taken Sombrero? :)

Also superb sort of x-ray shot of that 917/20 on the link you posted:

I don't know but it looks like the Green Hell.

I have that poster (but unsigned) that came with the book "Champions et bolides" from Dieter Stappert, a Silva book...

in French traducted by Roland Christen. It was about the 1974 F-1 WC. Fantastic reading 40 years after...

Yes that's correct, I thought it was the Nordschleife but I thought it would be an easy guess. It is in fact at Quiddelbacher Höhe, take a look at this other angle from 1973:

That poster looks superb! And the book interesting of course!

To continue...

You really get a good impression on how big the cars on this shot. And also of how "extreme" it went with wings and aero devices.

It will never get better than this, Riverside 1973.

Functional minimalism at its 'golden age' best..
Not much in the way of electronic devices plugged there either, I'd reckon..
.. but then - we aint been back to zoom about on the moon - since the `70s, either..

How long did that beast hold the Le Mans 24hr distance record?
Decades wasn't it?

Well M-M , it seems that 'scary structure' space-frame construction - is deemed good enough - for a new 200+hp bike..

If the vid wont play, scroll down & see the still pic of the supercharged Ninja H2 Kawasaki space-frame..

Not sure some 917 drivers would agree with you as this being good enough:

"Them's the breaks" - as they say in the classics.. ..grim or no..

& I doubt any bike rider would feel any better about hitting that Armco either..

Or M-M, - are you suggesting that the Porker fell to bits - before hitting it?

Those lang-arschen types were a mistake, true..

I won't enter that debate car being more/less dangerous than bikes. To stay in the 917 theme, perhaps you have to go back few pages to hear about Woolfe's deadly crash at LeMans. Being trapped in his 917 when it caught fire with a tank full of fuel mustn't be really dangerous or bad to you?
