Diesel in F1?

Post

Just wondering:

Are there any specific regulations prohibiting use of diesel engines in F1?

If there are not, then which regulations would disallow usage of diesel indirectly?

the fuel must be at least 87 Octane Number
and the fuel allocation reduces below 10500 rpm

an 87 Octane fuel will not CI rapidly, the ignition delay time will be too long for combustion efficiency at 10500 rpm

87 RON, 87 MON or 87 (R+M)/2?

Be careful Diesel, they would put you under immense pressure before burning you alive several times a second. I know what I'm talking about, the whole F1 circuit runs over me once a year at about 300 km/h.

On topic: Look at article 19 of the regulations to see what is allowed regarding fuel(petrol).

Dear FIA, if you read this, please pm me for a redesign of the Technical Regulations to avoid finger nose shapes for 2016! :-)

well the 10.5k Rpm is a thing for gas powered engines based on max allowed fuel pressure. You just need to be able to create the same or more power with the same or less amount of fuel. I don't think the the RPM that we're creating that power at matters??

I'm a diesel fan...I'd like to see it .

Motor size restriction, this effectively discard diesel as no diesel can compete with petrol for same displacement, at least if both are turbocharged

Not if it is a 2 stroke diesel

2 stroke are banned

First two rules of Power Unit regulations discard diesel engines
ARTICLE 5 : POWER UNIT
5.1 Engine specification :
5.1.1 Only 4-stroke engines with reciprocating pistons are permitted.
5.1.2 Engine cubic capacity must be 1600cc (+0/-10cc).
They´re not banned, but what´s the point if they can´t compete with petrol engines?

Not in a boost unlimited, fuel flow limited formula. ;) It would only take an adjustment of the fuel flow rpm band ( the 100l/h from 4k rpm, maybe) for diesel to somewhat work.

a 4000 rpm CI engine of 1600 cc would need a very high boost (about 10 bar) to use 100 kg/hr of fuel
a single compressor stage could not do this

what rpm can a CI engine reach ??

Look to model aircraft CI mills.. they do rev.. ..but surely - RPM - are not the crucial metric..
