EDIT: I'm just watching the press conference and Hamilton confirmed he'll be taking an engine penalty this weekend.
Hamilton and Alonso reckon 4th is the best Hamilton can expect in the race starting from the back. I reckon Hamilton would happily take that if you could guarantee it.

mmh, would be interesting to know why exactly 4th though. Do they expect one of the teams in the battle for the podium spots to be so much better than the other, that they would be completely out of reach? And if so, which one?

Personally I would have expected a pretty close battle between Ferrari and Red Bull - but then it wouldn't make much sense to figure out 4th as a realistic target for Hamilton

Hamilton wasn't certain of 4th. Alonso threw that number on the table but Hamilton seemed far less optimistic.
Lewis, if you do start from the back, you say you will do all you can to limit the damage of taking a penalty. What would be a realistic finish if you do that?

LH: Honestly, I have no idea. Honestly, if you look... [Alonso interrupts...] fourth? He says fourth. Honestly, I really don't know how far I can get up. It depends, the pace of the other cars. We'll start tomorrow and we'll find out. If Red Bull are right close with us, that's two cars less, that's three down and then the gap follows behind. If the others are much much slower than the possibilities go up. There's going to be safety cars, all sorts of things. I started last in Hungary a couple of years ago when the gaps were much bigger and came fourth, so Sunday's definitely going to be harder than that and I just hope that I can get into the points. As long as I'm going forward, that's what matters.

Prediction:

-Vettel trumps Red Bull
-Lewis to crash out on error

Good point, the transcript makes that clearer.

Practice 1 now on Channel 4, live.

Cheers Phil
Not for nothing, Rosberg's Championship is the only thing that lends credibility to Hamilton's recent success. Otherwise, he'd just be the guy who's had the best car. — bhall II

All this talk about Hamilton being 4th and as if Rosberg has already won the race, the RB's have finished second and third. Would be a serious kick if Vettel turned up the volume and won it from nowhere! But, judging how this season has gone, I have no hope. I think Hamilton can still win this race.
"Sebastian there's very, you're a member of a very select few.. Stewart, Lauda, Piquet, Senna, Prost, Schumacher, Fangio.. VETTEL!"

So it's going to be 3 full engine sets.
I wasn't miles away with my guess at 4 sets but clearly there isn't time between FP3 and Qualiy.

It would seem my guess that it will be Rosberg that will end up in 'engine saving mode' towards the back of the year will be right.

Would be good for the championship, otherwise it is again a too easy WDC for Hamilton.

It would be good for the WC to have him crashed out, but the only times he did crashed out, apart from car failures, was when he couldn't find his ultimate qualifying speed. He's got a pretty relaxed weekend ahead. He can work on a balance to preserve his tires in the race. The only real risk is maybe some overtaking later in the race.

First corner with two eager Red Bulls, Ferrari's and Rosberg.... Raikkonen T-bones rosberg in La Source? Finally a win for Ricciardo again?

+1 on that. I am hoping for the same. But last time Ham was insistent on not starting from PitLane.
