Honda Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

The upshift sound. Does it not indicate that the gearbox is poor. The other cars upshift in a split-second but the McLaren/Honda takes ages in comparison. Is that because of a poor gearbox (slow shifting) or required so as not to over stress the engine or excite vibrations?

Allegedly, is the former (bolded) as per yesterdays quotes from this article:
https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/hond ... q=hasegawa
Furthermore, in a bid to minimise the oscillations, it is understood that Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne have been asked to change gear in a different rev range – which is costing some laptime.

Hasegawa added: "The vibration was not that much of a problem today. However, there was a little bit at the time of the up-shift, so if we solve that then we may earn a little more laptime."

Renault will catch up to Ferrari soon if Ferrari doesn't mind it's task, or at least Red Bull will. Honda is making tremendous progress, these things can develop in strange ways, little bits here, little bits there, then suddenly all the little bits start adding up and have a snowball effect. Sometimes all it takes is just two or three critical pieces to be solved and it makes the rest of the puzzle obvious.
I share your sentiment on this !!! It's not all doom and gloom =D> =D>

find it hard to believe that 2017 PU at its full power the car is just 0.7 faster than 2016 qualy time due to new regs
while 2017 PU follow Mercedes layout , it must be detuned alot until they master the layout
with no tokens i think after 6 months from now should be entirely another story
para bellum.

What he want, dynamites on back? Honda is improved alot, stronger than 2016 Ferrari PU in first appearance. Clearly not that bad. All about down to transmission, and whose gonna change to make vibration better. At least before Monaco we will know nothing.

My guess is he wants the third year of this project to be powerful and reliable enough to fight with the front end of the customer field and be making enough inroads on the manufacturer field to maybe grab a sneaky podium under the right conditions. It's not an unreasonable ask. Also, he's probably right, there seem to be flaws in Honda's methodology. This has been brought up by someone who is allegedly an insider. Honda have most likely got the talent, but they need to adapt to the environment they find themselves in.

German media is reporting about intensified actions of Mclaren to get rid of Honda within the season. Honda might then supply Sauber with engines, and Mclaren might be supplied by Mercedes!

Don't worry, if they are out of Mclaren, it is Williams as the works team.
