I wasn't talking about onboards though, just coverage in general. Last weekend I watched using a streaming service at 1080p 25fps at a bitrate of about 8000 kb/s. I thought it looked great.
What streaming service was that?

Probably on an IPTV host.

Wait.. SkyF1 is only upscaled? Whats the point in that? A 4K TV will upscale automatically anyway (you know, otherwise you would get an image filling a quarter of the screen. :wtf: .).

Races are true 4k.

Really? At home?

If they´re 4k filmed that does not mean they´re 4k broadcasted

And if they´re 4k broadcasted that means here in Spain we´re a very long way back, as here they´re not even true HD  That wouldn´t be a surprise tough

They're filmed and broadcasted to the home TVs at 4k, but only to the top of the line 2tb sky Q boxes. I'd presume optic fibre connection is a prerequisite anyway, in which case it's not really that difficult to broadcast at 50+ Mbit/s.

Sky doesnt have fibre optic. The 'fibre' broadband that Sky operate (and the other ISPs other than Virgin) is not actually fibre optic other than a cable in the phone cabinet on the street. Everything else is the same old copper wiring but then a new cable in the cabinet.
Dont get confused by FTTC and FTTP

Don't get caught up in the marketing. Very few broadcasts use full HD properly let alone 4k.

Doesnt matter if fibre is really fibre or not, if it can deliver a sustained 30Mb+ then its fine. I have 300Mb cable, but it wont mean they send me a better video stream.

What comes down the line is obviously highly compressed video, so 4K or not I doubt its a match for something like full HD Blu-ray quality. What i wonder is whether sky 4K is 4K all the way through the process. Does it ever get downgraded to 1080P then upscaled again? If so its not really 4K. Remember you can view SD TV on a 4K TV and because the TV upscales it, its 4K, but it doesnt look 4K.

To be honest I cant tell the difference between Netflix 1080P and 2160P streams because the bitrate isnt high enough. From what ive seen of Sky 4K, I don't think its any better.

probably not, It is just too soon for the whole chain to be in place. At least it is being recorded in 4K. Maybe at the end of the year we will get 4K Blu-Ray 2017 season overview discs. I hope so.

Yea definitely bit rate / compression is more important than resolution, beyond a certain point.

Just for reference, as in what is currently available:

WRC.2016.Round13.Great.Britain.Day3.SS22.Sat.Feed.2160p.H265.
28000 kbps (50)Resolution: 3840x2160

Bitrate (FPS): 29000 kbps (50)Resolution: 3840x2160

The.Grand.Tour.S01E13.2160p.Web-Rip.X264
Bitrate (FPS): 34400 kbps (24)Resolution: 3840x2160p

Formula1.2017.Round01.Australia.Race.SkySportsF1.1080p.50fps.H264
Bitrate (FPS): 5998 kbps (50)Resolution: 1080p

Formula1.2017.Round01.Australia.Race.SkySport1HD.1080i.H264
Bitrate (FPS): 12100 kbps (25)Resolution: 1920*1080

Formula1.2017.Round01.Australia.Race.Sat.Feed.1080i.H264
Bitrate (FPS): 26600 kbps (25)Resolution: 1920x1080

Seems most 4K motorsport material has a bitrate slightly above 1080P from the satelite feed, but far higher than regular 1080P feeds. Most 720P material is well below 10 Mbps.

A TV broadcast for 1080i on Sky is at 26k bitrate? Does Sky still broadcast in shitty mpeg2? If Sky can really broadcast at 26k then that should be enough bandwidth for 4k using HVEC.

This doesn't seem right.
