Renault Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

According to Marko, there was no engine nor fuel consumption problems and they could have pushed till the end if they wanted.
That's funny, because raikkonen said he had to fuel save troughout the race. Perhaps marko thinks there was no problem with consumption relative to the other power units, as in they're on the same level in that regard.

I wonder if this kers upgrade will be available for Daniel's second engine in China.
What second engine? Horner said Ricciardo's car had a fuel cell problem.
On my TV when they interviewed Horner after riciardo broke down they said it was an engine problem. I have not heard anything else mentioned.

2 gearbox sensor issues and later on no fuel pressure.

I wanted to compare the RE.17's physionomy with the older Renault engines (here the 2015 spec)
The lower pic comes from Scarbs https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C70agFqXgAAtK6_.jpg
IMO the engine intake plenum seems to be placed a bit more forward (and looks to be higher) and the air-box seems to descend earlier towards the compressor and it seems to surround the plenum, whereas it used to descend behind the plenum before...
So the PU seems to be more compact.

Interestingly, new MGU-K is 5kg lighter which means old one was at least 12 kg (because in 2017 there is a minimum MGU-K weight of 7 kg).

That's why Red Bull RB13 is cca 5 kg over the minimum weight limit, as confirmed by Helmut Marko.

The ERS temps (4th column from the right) of ~55°C: any guesses as to which specific component that would be? Battery pack only? Also, would a 45°-50° manifold temp be common for this formula?

I think 50° is just about ballpark for post aftercooler

I think the Renault powered teams currently have a huge disadvantage by running the 2016 MGU-K. In the first part of the China Race (while RAI was chasing RIC) you could see the Renault MGU-K recovering energy (flickering rear lights) way before the braking zones at the RedBull, while at both Ferraris the rear light did not light up once.

Marko said in Melbourne that the PU is slightely detuned. Maybe the 2016k is detuned because it wasnt designed to work at the higher temperatures that the new ERS can cope with...

Bottas was averaging 10-12 kph higher top speed on the back straight, and 10 kph higher on the main straight compared to Ric in the early stages or the race.

Renault is having quite a bit of unreliability issues. Luckily (unlike a certain rival manufacturer) they have 3 teams on track. Hope it all gets solved imminently so they can properly focus on performance upgrades.

Saw some photos on the STR12 thread. Noticed that the exhaust setup has changed. Do we know of any PU updates Renault were planning for Sochi?
