FIA tire registration

Post

How does the FIA register which tires are used by a driver? Is that done by the FIA guy in the pitbox or is there some automated system on the end of the pitlane?

Great Question!

FIAWEC and also F1 use a proprietary RFID system that is located at the Pit Exit. There are sensors that record the impulse from the RFID tag located in each tire, which is sealed into the tire at manufacture.

As the car passes out of the pit the sensors (six) detect each tire (three sensors on each side of the lane) and logs the info to an operator in Race Control. Each team is assigned the ID's and these are entered into a database by tire type, use, etc for the team. Number of laps is recorded via the timing system info being mated with the passing through the sensors, and each "set" is matched, so that mis-matches thow an alert to race control.

The system is set up with lasers and meticulously balanced prior to race, and operates on conditioned power, not shore power in the event of a power loss. Very high tech, and the person who is responsible for this in FIAWEC (Guilloume B.) is a very smart, dedicated and talented guy.

Found a pic of the FIA system and thought I would share it...3 sensors each side, pit exit.
