McLaren did not seem to be very usefull with Mercedes knowledge from 2014, when they went to Honda.
That's because honda guys never did pay attention about Mclaren suggestions what not to do,the rest is history.

What did not stuck in your couple? And what made communication impossible?

Hasegawa: The first reason is that we have not done a good job. I can apologize for lack of time, lack of discernment about our hopes ... All of which combined with the lack of power have altered our initial good communication. McLaren was not happy and let him know. A better team spirit should have prevailed, but it did not depend solely on us. We are two in a couple ...

In this type of conflict, there are always good and bad. Have you defended yourself enough?

Hasegawa: I understand what you mean ... We had our problems, and McLaren was his. I could have pointed out the chassis problems encountered, but it would have been pointless to point who is responsible for what and for what. We had our problems, and we were not in a position to comment ...

I’m talking about obvious visable specs of the PU. Fuel consumption, ERS deployment amount, oil usage, gps traces, etc. McLaren technicians are not stupid, the average one should at least have comparable knowledge of powerunits as we amateurs one this forum have. Honda should have been prevented from building the disasterous size zero PU.

I think it's premature to suggest McLaren have a dedicated internal combustion engine department with the same level of experience and or technical prowess as Honda, Renault, Merc or Ferrari would have.
That's not to say they don't have powertrain specialists in their road car division, but it's probably a stretch to assume they have developmental engineers with the right know how unless they were looking at designing and manufacturing their own engines soon.
Even so. I'm not sure I'd be confident in saying McLaren engineers have complete understanding and comprehension of how the Honda PU works in its entirety. McLaren always say you'd have to ask Honda how this works, why this isn't working, how long it will be until updates.

Basically I don't think, even as works partners, they were privy to every detail or as much as some are suggesting.

The time McLaren lost due to the shitty pre-season testing obviously affected the chassis. I dont know what people expect. The problem here is the failure to acknowledge that despite such a dismal pre-season testing, McLaren has produced a decent chassis.

Or maybe the issues with the chassis magnified the shittiness of preseason testing?

Either way, it was a team effort that produced 3 years of relatively poor outings.

Gotta love the brutal honesty of Hasegawa.

I for one was completely floored by what Honda showed up with at the winter tests. They knew all the marbles were at stake and yet...They came completely ill prepared.

Why did they keep updating the 2016 PU ? Why didn't they put absolutely everything into 2017 ASAP in 2016?

yes he left end of 2015 but by that time the next 6 moths of development have been decided at least.
Hasewaga, probably expend 2 moths understanding the structure of the company and what were the problems on the PU design.
So probably by juneish 2016 , Honda decided to change completely the design of the PU with not enough Tokens spare to try new components or materials for the 2017.
So the real development of this new PU has been this few last months. Probably if optimistic we should start to see results before Chirstmas but I am really confident that by beginning of 2018 Honda PU would be fit to race. How close to Mercedes and Ferrari that's to see.

Back on the driver salaries... Vandoorne is making a name for himself recently by looking quite the match for Alonso in Q and race. Alonso's negotiating leverage must surely be on the decline after this?

McLaren needs a big name to be taken seriously both on & off the track, I think Alonso still has plenty of barganing chips left
