Mercedes AMG F1 W08 EQ Power +

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

The more I see these bargeboard evolutions the more I see where Mercedes went wrong. Well not wrong, the thing stopping them from having the superiority they previously enjoyed. I expect to see the chassis take a big step forward next year, I just hope the chassis complexity doesn't hamper their development. Where Mercedes can make big gains is in the sidepod areas(Ferrari is ahead of the curve and their chassis shows), I expect Mercedes and most teams really to try and copy that elegant solution. It's clear all the developments are attempting to manage airflow creating a high pressure zone at the sidepod undercut. This creates not only downforce in that area of the car, but also increases both speed and mass flow under the car increasing diffuser efficiency.

It's why you see small diffuser like tips at the edge of the floor running along the side of the car.

Its an article in German, you could probably use google translate, but basically Merc seem to be going in different route for 2018, bigger rake & shorter wheel base.

Explaining the lack of upgrades perhaps?

Mercedes examines the principle of greater employment for next year's W09. The engineers know what they are doing. "It would be a total concept change. It requires a completely different sealing of the floor to the side and a completely new diffuser type. At such a step there is a risk that you are slow in the beginning. "

At least having had a competitive car this year means they know how much downforce they need to achieve to be competitive next year. If they'd changed concept with the rule changes they'd have had no idea what would be a good downforce figure.

Seems like there is a divider above the t-tray. Has this been present all season?

Very good point (+1'd). However they must be more cautious than that. Total downforce is easy to measure at different air speeds, but it is transitional across these speeds. The driver must feel progression or they will lose confidence in the car. This is where Red Bull have excelled in reason years.
