Cosworth DFV & Lotus 49 *Dial-up alert

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Thank you manchild, it's nice to see the DFV in all it's glory. I can't think of a more successful and influential engine in motor racing. It became the template of engine design and location, and was successful not only in F1, but Indy cars, Endurance cars and who knows what else. It became the foundation of the 70's "kit car", where so many manufacturers dropped the DFV in a chassis, and went racing, successfully. From the Brabahms to Hesketh, it worked. The British motor racing industry owes it's success because of this engine. Because it was so strong and successful, the teams didn't have to worrry about a powerplant, they just designed suspensions and chassis to work with it.
A real gem.

Is it me or are those piston.mpg and engine-gears.mpg just wrong? They have valve-opening order wrong, it looks like out-empty-empty-in, which is quite pointless, no? :)

Good eye for detail.. but.........if you check the picture second from the top (http://www.execulink.com/~movegrafx/600 ... gine8m.JPG) you can determine the direction of crankshaft rotation by examining the water pump on the lower left of the block. It can only rotate in a specific direction becuase it uses centrifugal force.

Beautiful Manchild, I should expect nothing less.

I love those old 60s/70s intake trumpets. I saw a cossi engine in a rally preped Escort with those same trumpets, one of the nicest engines I've ever seen.

Thanks

Valve opening order is good. Check my avatar.

1)Downstroke with open set of valves -> intake
2)Upstroke, other set of valves open -> exhaust
3)Downstroke with closed valves -> nothing because cilinder is empty
4)Upstroke with closed valves -> nothing because the cilinder is empty
Try running an engine like this, ain't gonna happen.

Either it's horribly wrong, or the perspective is so warped that we're seeing the valveset for a different piston than the one we're seeing.
Check my avatar.
I'm aware, I've been annoyed by it ever since I first saw it :p. Check NickT's avatar for what it should look like.

NickT's avatar is Mazda or Honda I'm not sure, normal passenger car engine that has very different timing of valves.

Cosworth from animation: intake valve opens shortly but it opens while piston is still down - mixture is inside of the cyl, intake valves close, all valves are closed, pistong goes up=compression, explosion, piston going down, exhaust valves opening.

Manchild --Thanks for posting the Coswoth DFV--wonderful to see so many detailed pictures--I have only seen one picture of it's internals before--an exploded view in Road & Track magizine in the late 60's--and some of the details were obscured--to me , this is THE engine of the modern GP era. I always mean't to ask--what engine is your Avatar? I've always liked watching it's operation--& watching Ciro's new Avatar ( for 10 or 15 minutes )--- is better than most recreational substances. Always liked your Avatar MC.

Hmm, so the valves are essentially already going back up when the piston action is pulling in intake or pushing out exhaust? That's a lot more borderline timing then I would've imagined.

How long did it take MC, do you have a CAD of it with the suspension etc?

I found a book on Lotus and discovered there was a slightly earlier version of this car and engine without all the aero on Gold Leaf livery. This can't be the same Cosworth that lasted Lotus till the mid 80s, is it?

No, no... it wasn't me. When I wanted to make my avatar I googled for animated engine, well, not googled but altavistaed

(altavista video search is the best on web).

So I just ripped off that video, killed 90% of the frames, converted from mpeg to avi and than made gif from avi, reduced size, colors etc
