J-Damper

Also known as jounce damper. This is a type of damper introduced to F1 by McLaren early on in 2005. It usually contains a rotating mass, mimicking a tuned mass damper that was later used by Renault as an alternative, but then banned. More info at: www.f1technical.net/features/10586

Jaguar

A Ford-owned luxury carmaker that entered F1 in 2000 following the takeover of the Stewart team.

Jordan

This Silverstone-based team was founded by Eddie Jordan in 1990 and had it's first race in Phoenix 1991. Its first win was immediately a 1-2 with Damon Hill and Ralf Schumacher behind the wheel, in 1998's Spa race where an enormous crash in the first lap and the clash between Schumacher and Coulthard opened the way for Jordan to finish 1-2 in the rainy Belgium.

Jounce

The action of bouncing. When speaking of shock absorbers, it is the compression stroke - usually happens when a wheel hits a bump and moved upward compared to the chassis. "Rebound" is the opposite movement.

Jump start

Sensors detect if a driver moves away from his start position before five red lights are showing and if he does, a penalty is given.
