Jenson Button went fastest on the first day of testing in preparation for the 2013 Formula One Championship. Button was in the garage for nearly the entire morning with a fuel pump problem, but in the afternoon he managed to somewhat rectify the situation and go fastest of all.

Mark Webber went second fastest and completed 73 laps without major issues. Romain Grosjean did not improve on the site he set in the morning and hence dropped from 1st to third in the afternoon.

Most troublesome was Nico Rosberg who completed a mere 11 laps. In the morning his car suffered an electrical fault that caused fire on the car, bringing him to a halt at turn 11. As the team was unable to fix the problem quickly, they said around noon that they would sit out the remainder of the day. Rosberg however claimed to be positive about the car, despite having only run 11 laps.

At Marussia things were probably equally as bad as late in the afternoon, after having completed 29 laps, the rear suspension of the Marussia MR02 failed, forcing Max Chilton into the wall. The British driver escaped unharmed but the team likely have some work to in order to get the car ready for tomorrow.
