Further rain interferes with running in FP2

By on

Lewis Hamilton topped the second practice session at Melbourne, but it became yet another fairly useless one in terms of running and the ability to judge how quick everyone really is. Further rain forced running on the intermediate Pirelli tyres, and lots of drivers opted not to run much at all.

Carlos Sainz however did manage 16 laps, having had to sit out most of the morning session due to car issues.

Along with Sainz, both McLaren drivers also proved fairly active, as McLaren and Honda seek to do as many laps as possible to verify their reliability and get more data to make further progress. It were however Manor's rookie drivers who did most laps, with Wehrlein topping the charts at 24 laps and his team mate, Rio Haryanto, completing 22.

In general, there were no major technical problems, even though Nico Rosberg created one for himself by crashing off, following a spin at Turn 7. He broke the front wing off his car and scrapped the nose cone as well. Interestingly, Rosberg had the crash with a new nose fitted on his car, which the team opted not to run in FP1 in fear of damage.
